| Why is FCPS substitute pay so low? I was thinking of doing it but I don't feel like its worth the hassle at $18.50 an hour, especially of you have a college degree. It seems really low. |
| They lowered a few years ago to balance the budget. They used to pay more for former teachers and stopped that too. |
Thus the sub shortage… |
Should be giving extra for combat pay at many schools.
|
They dropped the rate a few years ago, but retired FCPS teachers still get a higher rate than other subs. They didn’t stop doing that. |
| They raised sub pay two years ago. It’s something like $19/hour which seems like a lot especially given the flexibility. |
NP: Yes but it used to be significantly more for retired teachers and now it’s only trivially more. I lost the majority of my dependable subs when that happened. |

It doesn't seem like enough for the nonsense they will deal with. |
| $19 hour isn't much. You can get paid that much at Starbucks or Target. |
Maybe, but are they flexible to where you wouldn’t have to work evenings or weekends? I wonder if it is easy to get time off. |
As a sub, just don’t accept jobs when you want to be off. I suspect it is not too hard to get a day of from Target or Starbucks here and there. |
I know they increased pay for retirees at that time too but it sounds like it didn’t get as high as it used to be. |
|
I get 18 at a preschool with all the holidays paid off.
And is extremely flexible -( without pay.)which also helps a lot. |
Hahahaha. YOU try being a sub. $19 an hour is terribly LOW when you have to do it and find out how hard it is. Subbing should be paid $30 an hour to start, and licensed teachers should be paid $40. And then incentives should be offered on top of that for hard to staff schools, sped, etc. A school without subs might as well shut down for the day. You cannot operate a school without competent subs. |
