This Singer guy could have just billed them all as a college consultant and no one would have been alerted to this, correct?

well, it involved 700 people. so at some point, this was all going to come out anyway. the FBI had wiretaps of conversations irrespective of greedy rich people taking tax deductions for bribes.

The FBI has the tapes because they found out that Singer was shady and he started cooperating.

Great advice from attorney Ken White, btw:

“The takedown of this college scandal is so classic. They flip the top guy and then just ride him around the country making recorded calls for a year.

WHEN SOMEONE CALLS AND SAYS "OH HAI REMEMBER THAT FRAUD WE DID LAST YEAR SHALL WE DO IT AGAIN" YOU HANG UP

"THAT FRAUD WE DID LAST TIME WAS VERY SUCCESSFUL BUT I HAVE ONE CONCERN THAT YOUR PARTICIPATION WASN'T KNOWING AND WILLFUL ENOUGH WOULD YOU AGREE THAT YOU WERE KNOWING AND WILLFUL? JUST WANT TO MAKE SURE YOU'RE UP FOR THIS."

Lololol

That's actually funny.

I also like the idea of Lori Loughlin's daughters having to audit a bunch of university classes (not for credit obviously) and be forced into bootcamp with the crew team.

They aren’t going to jail for this.
They’ll spend a small fortune on lawyers and possibly fines. It certainly would have been cheaper to just do a big donation and walk through that front door, but...
Darling this is what PR people are for.
Lori will Star in the lifetime movie for this. She’ll get producer credit. Possibly screen writing too.
The story of a mother so blinded by love for her children she did the unthinkable. Writes itself. Her comeback tour on the talk show circuits will be fabulous. She’s so much more interesting now. Can’t wait to hear her side of it!
And Olivia Jade...
Whatever. Her 2 million subscribers don’t GAF. They weren’t following her vlog, for its deep insights. She’s shallow, but so are they.
They bribed her way into UCSB so she couldn’t get home easily, and keep up her social life.
LA is so incredibly superficial, they don’t even see the issue.

Agreed

I doubt social media influencer is a sustainable career. Her influencer career probably will start to decline before her peers graduate from college. Her followers will outgrow or tire of inane posts and there will be younger, hipper, edgier influencers who will replace her before they themselves are replaced.

But like...her parents are multi (x100000) billionaires. Even if her social media career dies out...she will be more than fine.

There are thousands of people who had money and fame temporarily when they were young - actors, models, athletes, musicians, who had actual skills, but had short careers and then had very difficult lives once the money and fame disappeared. Media influencer is a flash-in-the-pan, not a career.

It's too bad she didn't even appreciate the risk and expense her mother took for her. Her mother should have just let her do what the Kardashians did and not go to college.

Ms. Giannulli has been a public presence for several years, thanks to her frequent social media posting. She was criticized in August after posting a video with the title “basically all the tea you need to know about me (boys, college, youtubers)” in which she said that she was only going to college for “gamedays, partying.”

“I don’t really care about school, as you guys all know,” she said.

A. Lori Loughlin was a Christian-Middle America darling. She'll be fired from the Hallmark channel, known for is morality contracts and written off her TV Show When Calls The Heart over this. Lifetime won't touch her either.

The kind of image she cultivated is now completely at odds with what she is being prosecuted for.

Even ones who aren’t smart (like my brother, even he got in somewhere and he just isn’t smart or a good test taker). Why in the world a parent would go to all this trouble and break so many laws for one specific college because their kid couldn’t get into that college just stuns me. All for one school. Ridiculous.

Well, it's Yale or fail for certain people; I don't find it stunning at all.

Agree.

In this case, however, she leveraged a new contract related to being a college student influence, hawking dorm gear and so forth. Had she not been in college she would have had to limit herself to makeup, clubs and god knows what else.

Also, Mom said she never had a chance to go to college, and wanted her daughters to have that experience. Perhaps they can experience prison together.

I'm at a total loss as to why her family valued USC or UCLA so much over places like SMU, ASU, Arizona or SEC and lower ranked Big 10 universities she likely could have gotten into as a full-pay dumb rich kid from California? I understand USC and UCLA are more competitive than ever but for a ditz, why were they so obsessed? Doesn't make sense at all. Are there people who think USC is really, really prestigious?

They are also ditzes.

This question was already answered here, somewhere on page 25, or 30. "Mommy, I reaallly want to go to USC, because Addie and Maddie and Ashley are going theeere"".
The only explanation that comes to mind.

Where does William H Macy fit into all of this? They’re still married, right?

They're still married. They haven't charged him--yet. The guy claims he met with him as well as huffman but my guess is so far the trail of money, emails, etc. goes back only to her and her accounts--would make sense they keep all their stuff separate for legal and other reasons since they are both high-earning and high-profile.

Or, so far they only have actual evidence (the transcripted phone conversations) of his involvement with the second daughter, who ultimately was not a student benefitting from the scheme. The parents changed their mind on her at the 11th hour.

They have Felicity Huffman on recorded phone conversations where the fraud is admitted. They don't have Macy on a recorded call.

The complaint explains how they nailed all the parents. Once Singer was caught and was cooperating, the FBI had him call each person to say he was giving them a heads up that his foundation was being audited, and if there were questions about the parents' contributions, he was not going to say that it was for [getting the proctor to take/correct their daughter's ACT/SAT; or bribing the coach and faking athletic accomplishments; or whatever that specific fraud was] to get the parent on tape agreeing and not disputing that fraud was the reason for the contribution to the foundation. He also would tell them that, by the way, the coach was impressed with the fake athlete profile you created and said they may use that format themselves, also so that the parent would be on tape acknowledging or at least not disputing the fraud.

Incorrect. They DO have Macy on recorded calls.
He is referred to as "spouse" and makes comments.
But Macy is discussing the second daughter who ultimately did not use the scheme.

166. On or about December 12, 2018, HUFFMAN and her spouse spoke with CW-1
again to finalize plans for their younger daughter’s exam. During the call, CW-1 confirmed that
the price to participate in the cheating scheme would be $15,000, and discussed with HUFFMAN
and her spouse whether they thought their daughter would actually take the exam over two days,
in order to achieve as high a score as possible before CW-2 corrected her answers. Excerpts
from the call, which was consensually recorded, are set forth below.
CW-1 Yeah. So I guess the question for both of you guys are-- is, are we going
to do this similarly that we did with [your older daughter] where the
[younger daughter] will take thetest at [the West Hollywood Test Center]
--
SPOUSE Yeah, I think [inaudible].
CW-1 I’m sorry.
SPOUSE Yes, I think we are [inaudible].
CW-1 Okay. Same exact. Same exact so she’ll take the test [at the West
Hollywood Test Center]. [CW-2] will be the proctor. We will ensure that
sh-- we get a score that will be inthe 14s or-- or, or higher because we
want toachieve the schools we want to get to, correct?
SPOUSE --we’re talking about Georgetown, places like--
CW-1 Yeah. So we’ll need to b-- we’ll need to be mid 14s to 1500 to be-- to be
solid. That’s out of 1600. So that means that sh-- she’ll score in the 700s in each category.
….
CW-1 Okay, and then, so then are we-- so againthe last time we did this. Just so I
can make sure the financial part is all squared away that then we’ll-- we
will send you an invoice for $15,000 and we’ll-- and that’ll be all taken
care of. Are we all okay with the financial side and the actual operational side of it?
SPOUSE --cool.
CW-1 Okay. That’s what I wanted-- that’s what I wantedto know, Okay, so
what I’ll do is we will start the paperwork of getting everything
accomplished in February sothat the test can be sent to [the West
Hollywood Test Center]. And, and then Felicity, my guess is you’ll have
[a] conversation, the school, may have [a] conversation with you and
you’ll just say, “You know, essentially what we’re going to do is [my
older daughter] took the-- the exam here,we don’t want to miss any
school, we’re going to take it over the weekend, and we’re-- we’re very
comfortable with this process because we’ve already doneit once before
and it worked out really well.”
SPOUSE: That’s [inaudible].
HUFFMAN: Okay.
….
SPOUSE Do we want two days?
HUFFMAN Better for her to take it over two days? I think it is.
CW-1 Well, at this point, Felicity, it doesn’treally matter because we’re going to get a s-- a score --
SPOUSE --I -- I understand that.
CW-1 But it’s up to you how you want to do this in--in her head.
SPOUSE She’ll score higher. Just her base score will be higher if we did it over two days.

Wm H Macy isn’t in the clear yet. In fact, the FBI plans to bring in Frances McDormand to reprise her role as Officer Marge Gunderson in Fargo and interrogate Macy.
