Damn, that purple suit though. Man showed up.

You have never lived in the south.

 That's not what my official transcripts say, but okay.

I think they believed her, were simply in denial their child could have done something so horrible. I can’t imagine how they must be feeling right now.

To me, that doesn't matter. They had their daughter back. They should have shut up at that point. Why did they go on the show? To defend themselves and their daughter's honor - purely selfish reasons. By going on the Today show and repeating her story, they stoked fear in the community and made it even harder for victims in the future to be taken seriously. I would have sympathy if they would have kept a low profile and let this play out.

You and your arrogance also have the benefit of being an armchair quarterback.
You're not emotionally involved (and exhausted). You didn't go through 3 long days of no sleep, not knowing where you child was. You have no idea.

Hindsight is 50/50, and you have no idea how you'd react in the same situation.
You couldn't know, and if you say you do, you're lying.
This situation is completely unrelatable.

I imagine they were being advised of what to do/say by family, friends, other influences, etc and they followed someone's lead.

These aren't professional scam artists, they're people who believed that their daughter was missing and may not see her ever again, and when they find out she was lying, they probably didn't know how to proceed from there.

From what I read, the show was booked long before she came home .. do you think they were gonna let them back out without a fight?? Shows like "Today" (who are in DAILY ratings wars with other morning shows) put an immense amount of pressure on these types of families, and make promises they usually don't keep.

It's a situation that her parents weren't mentally prepared for -- they deserve our grace, not your never ending judgements.

They raised her. They have an idea of what she's capable of or at least know more of her history that this didn't come out of left field. Probably some permissive parenting is what led to this situation in the first place. Hopefully this is the wake up call the entire family needs in order to get help or open their eyes.

If you don't think good parents even wind up with kids who are messed up...you have not lived very long.

+1 so true. Sometimes good parenting cannot overcome one's genetic makeup.

Does being a good parent mean you can’t admit your child’s mistakes and shortcomings? Why is the assumption the parents are good? What do we know about Carlee and her upbringing? Seems like there are some issues in the household.

There's a video on her Instagram of her parents surprising her at her high school graduation, like literally at the ceremony, with what looks to be a BMW. https://www.instagram.com/p/29C4SXyy5v/

That screams indulgent parenting.

Probably another case of affluenza.

But based upon her prior social media presence, she was not exactly raised to a high standard.

Material goods are not what solid parenting is all about.

I hate that we are attacking her parents for her actions. I really hope that none of your children ever do anything this stupid.

Carlee is an adult. A fully fledged adult who should know better. Her parents truly failed her and continue to fail her by not advising her to do the right thing, accept responsibility, and make amends. Instead the family stand by her in her delusions and lies. They should all be held accountable.

A lot of parents would stand by their kids in this situation. Maybe not hold a press conference and perpetuate the lies but definitely stand by their kid.

I see nothing wrong with this. Rich kids get expensive cars all the time. The problem that I have is how it’s done. I hate the show that was put on. I hate to see this take place at sweet 16 parties and graduations.

I’m getting serious Mona Lisa Saperstein vibes from this woman.

Haha! Yep, definitely a case of out of touch “affluenza” combined with a personality disorder leading to bad judgment. Crazy that she thought she could get away with it.

But that's what we're talking about. Most people would never be in this situation nor react the way these parents have.

Her parents have been vilified, mocked, and demeaned. That ship has unfortunately sailed. Getting mocked for your dumb behavior doesn’t ruin your life. Get a grip.

I tried to reserve judgment on this case, tried to be fair + to keep an open mind until more facts emerged but I have to admit > I had my doubts (mostly intuitions) from the get go.

Mostly I thought it was odd that this woman saw a toddler in a diaper walking on the side of the freeway.
It could have been that someone purposely used their own child as a pawn to get this girl to get out of her car…..
But what mystified me is that no other calls were made to 911 from other motorists claiming they saw the same thing.

➡️ Let me be more specific - Say for example that I wanted to use this technique to lure a young woman from her car.
So I put my young child on the side of the freeway as a way to do so.

A.) It would be highly probable that many drivers would see my child, stop and likely call law enforcement.
How could I possibly narrow them down to a young, pretty concerned citizen?
I just couldn’t.

B.) I would risk losing my child for doing such an act or even worse -> could lose my child forever if said child was hit.

After hearing her family & boyfriend state that this woman was fighting for her life, both physically as well as mentally convinces me this all was a ploy to make nat’l headlines and get famous.
Or sympathy.
Or money.

Or all of the above.
She now IS famous (rather infamous!) really.
She has been featured on People.com and TMZ the past wk while her parents did an interview on The Today Show.

And since this girl IS young and good-looking, she likely will get a book deal, her own reality show then come out w/a wig line too.

Unfortunately this is the world we all live in.

I think we have a different understanding of what having your life ruined means. I have no doubts that it is currently a really difficult situation for her. However, I hope that with the passage of more time she will hold a regular job, have regular interpersonal relationships with friends/family, and just go about her existence like anyone else.

So true.

I remember that other lady who put Gorilla Glue™️ in her hair made nat’l headlines for her dumb behavior.

She got a Dr. to remove the glue from her head free of charge.

Hell there was even a SNL skit about her starting Kenan Thompson.

You know (as they say) that you are famous when a skit is created based on who you are. ✨

Opinion? The Hoover PD laid it out pretty well yesterday. No opinions are necessary. There are plenty of facts

Yet, they refrained from ridiculing her. It is public opinion that will always haunt her. Not the law.

there is only one sin, only one. And that is theft. Every other sin is a variation of theft. When you kill a man, you steal a life... you steal his wife's right to a husband, rob his children of a ather. When you tell a lie, you steal someone's right to the truth. When you cheat, you steal the right to fairness... there is no act more wretched than stealing.

Khaled Hosseini, The Kite Runner

This is much more than a stupid mistake. A stupid mistake is doing the math wrong on your taxes. She took advantage of the best part of people. She stole their time, their money, their sleep, their peace, their trust. It is loathsome beyond belief.

I might be one of the PPs who was accused of having no empathy. To the contrary, I am an extremely empathetic person. I'm also the parent of multiple children, including a son who has a difficult temperament and a history of stretching the truth (the others are responsible rule followers). I don't think I made my nearly perfect daughter the way she is, nor did I, as a parent, single-handedly create the problem behavior by son. I can tell you that when my son gets in trouble, I pause and inquire into the truth before rushing to judgment or to defend my son. It is very difficult as a parent to manage the shame and embarrassment you feel when one of your kids does something stupid, but that's part of being a parent. Your job is to support your kid and make every effort to steer them in the right direction. When you go after others without taking time to ascertain the veracity of your kid's account, it only enables bad behavior.

There is no way Carlee did something this outrageous without a long history of questionable behavior and other instances of lying. I get that her parents were traumatized after thinking she had been kidnapped, but I don't respect them for doubling down on Carlee's obviously suspicious account without more consideration. Going on the Today Show was selfish and disrespectful to all of the law enforcement personnel and volunteers who rushed to help their family.
