Life in Wisconsin

Can anyone tell me what it's like? Thinking of moving there because it looks really beautiful. But I'd like to know what it's like. Also is it a good place for single women? I'm in my early 30s.

It all depends on where you want to go. Milwaukee is a great city right on Lake Michigan. Beautiful housing stock and great sports teams. Two of my favorite athletes are there or soon to be, Giannis and Simone. Madison is a great college town but I don’t think I would want to live there in my early 30s. Most of the other towns are not places I would move to as a newbie, because Wisconsinites can be a bit clannish. But Milwaukee, yes. I am from the South and went to college in Minneapolis. Almost all my boyfriends were from Wisconsin as is my husband. I definitely think for a single woman it’s not a bad place. Just avoid the heavy drinkers.

There are a lot of tall Nordic types. Or so I've heard. Probably a lot of men named Sven

People marry really young in midwest: marriage, kids, and a mortgage by 27 is common. People do start getting divorced in their 30s though so there might be a lot of eligible divorced.

Madison would be the exception to that tendency, due to the university.

How do you feel about endless grey skies, even in summer?

I traveled to Milwaukee for the first time this year, and thought it was pretty great. Have been to Madison before, but liked Milwaukee better. Chill vibe, good restaurants, nice people. So many bowling alleys.....

You don't know much about Wisconsin!

Milwaukee native here who just moved back after living in DC for 10 years. All I can say is do it! Wisconsin is a naturally beautiful state with lots of lakes and outdoor recreational activities. Milwaukee is a beautiful city on a huge lake that actually looks like the ocean most days. Gorgeous parks and Victorian/prewar housing stock at affordable prices. The restaurant scene is outstanding, there are lots of festivals and a vibrant theatre/arts scene. There is so much to do here year round, so much more than we ever had in DC. Also, the people are friendlier and there is a more fun loving vibe than we ever found on the East Coast. I went to school in Madison and it is also beautiful and great, but it is not urban enough for me. Wisconsin is one of the country’s best kept secrets, but we Wisconsinites are happy to share it and we love newcomers!

They are about 30 years out of date with this. I am GenX and many of my peers were like this, but the younger generations here (except maybe in small towns) are not getting married any earlier than anyone else.

Really? I used to hang with a very artistic working class crowd and was shocked-just like totally shocked—at how many of those tattooed 20 somethings with crazy colored hair had kids and wedding rings and were freaking homeowners! coming from DC it was just a surprise that these people could afford to buy on a creative working class salary.

Well, that’s the beauty of life here. “Working class” people can buy homes, not just the wealthy. Shocking I know.

That's Minnesota. Wisconsin had more Germans. Lots of beer and brats.

In addition to basically every other type of food imaginable.
