Health and PE over summer

How busy/hard is it?

Will the kids feel like they’re missing out on summer, or is it basically a breeze?

How many hours per day should kid dedicate to this?

My DS did it last summer -- HPE10.

It wasn't a breeze but wasn't horrible (although while he was going through it- he would complain). There is an hour-long zoom that you must do and you turn on cameras so you have to be there. Then there were some sports lessons online, questions to answer or I think maybe a health journal too. The hardest part was there were physical requirements that had to be met and they were very specific about how hard your heart needed to be working and for how long. You had to turn in logs from a fitbit to show it. Even though he was going to summer swim team practices, it often wouldn't meet the sustained amount of time under stress so he'd have to swim on his own, or run on the treadmill. But he got through it all and driver's ed.

Just a thought too -- he took it pass/fail because he calculated that to have an A in the class could bring down his GPA since he was going into 10th with a 4.3. That took off some of the pressure too to be perfect with every assignment. He didn't ever miss a class though as the penalties for that were pretty stiff.

It's probably more work than regular health and PE, but it's manageable. They say about 6-7 hours of work per day (I think this is right), but more like 3-4 hours. 1 hour class daily, 1 hour workout (often have to workout more than an hour to achieve goals), homework. Some teachers stricter than others, but if you do the work, attend class, and pay attention (I think) it's an easy A or pass.

If your kids are signed up for this through ACE, when do they get information about how the class works, what kind of fit bit they need, what their schedule will be, etc.? I presume all this will be coming at some point, but my rising 9th grader hasn't heard word one about what is needed for the class.

So when kids are in 8th grade picking their classes for 9th, does the summer course show as an option?

1 hour of class.
1 hour of an activity that you track (e.g. running, soccer, etc) with a fit bit type device.
1 hour'ish (some units a bit more) homework.

If you are in PE10. You also have some additional driver's ed requirements.

You will also have to do the CPR unit if you haven't.

No. You have to register via the summer online campus or whatever it's called. And when they register for the following year, you tell your counselor and they won't include it on the requested classes for the following year.

No, you sign up through FCPS's ACE Online website. I think signups go live some time early in the calendar year.

I've answered this question at least four times in the past year if you do a search. It's not that big a deal, it's only 4 weeks of the summer.

Any experience with ACE vs the Institute for the Arts one? When does registration open up?

we messed this up when registering for the 9th grade one. I'm not sure how. DC got an A but we expected it to be a pass. It will also bring down their GPA.

so a couple years ago my daughter wanted to do it at IFTA (summer after 8th grade)--turns out the PE started the week before IFTA started, when we were still on vacation. So she wasn't able to do it--which worked out in the end bc she ended up only doing two weeks of IFTA instead of 4 bc she wasn't having as much fun that year.

Also keep in mind your kid is in camp all day and then still has to do the exercise afterwards and any additional work.

You can simply just NOT sign up for PE when doing course selections in the spring, you don't have to sign up then drop it. Better to pick your desired electives first, then drop one if you change your mind in favor of PE which is offered every period of the day and easier to definitely get into than some electives.

Or be like my kid who then DIDN'T take PE 9 after 8th grade, took PE 10 thru Virtual Virginia after 9th grade to be able to do her drivers ed when eligible, and then took PE 9 after 10th grade.

It's not no comittment but not horrible. Mine did HPE 9, and 10 online.

It's about an hour of class (with camera on) and you have to participate. 1 hour of physical activity (you'll need a fitbit or something to keep HR at certain levels for certain times), and 30-60 min. of HW. In 10, you'll also have driver's ed, with some additional requirements.

Class lasts about 4 weeks and if you're on vacation and do it, it's a pain to get up early for class and to work out when you'd rather sit on the beach. But, it is what it is. And worth it for kids who hate PE or want to clear electives.

Was this ACE? The website doesn’t have any info on PE and how to sign up.
