Political scientists all but guaranteed a Dem victory in the 2028 POTUS race the day Trump was nominated by the GOP in 2024 just as they all but guaranteed a GOP victory in 2024 the day Biden was nominated by the Dems in 2020. We should have faith in science! They knew the sitting incumbent party had zero chance in 2020 and 2024 due to who the sitting POTUS would be and it's really more so just common sense than some equation only scientists can figure out.

The existing law requires back pay so the CR would have to reverse that. I doubt any dem would vote for it if it did.

I keep hearing this but is it true? My understanding is the current CR gives Vought and Trump the power to reallocate spending as they see fit. So why would they need a new CR. Isn’t the whole idea to challenge impoundment and given the administration the ability to ignore the spending allocated by Congress?

There is no current CR. That’s why there’s a shutdown.

The arguments for impoundment don't really extend to withholding backpay. The existing law establishes a financial obligation for the US government. That isn't typically the case for the budget. The budget sets aside the money, but the government doesn't incur an obligation until an agency goes to spend it.

Don't interpret that as any sort of defense of impoundment. That's a gross rejection of the separation of powers. I'm just saying even if you accept impoundment, it doesn't allow withholding of back pay.

I think there is no vote on the CR scheduled in the Senate until Thursday, correct? Will they do some negotiating and strike a deal by Thursday?
Getting closer and closer to the military missing that first paycheck.

It's only "negotiating" if you allow the possibility of a compromise - and for that possibility to exist the House needs to be back in session. But Mike Johnson is afraid of the Epstein files, so here we are.

Funding has to be passed/appropriated by Oct 13 to keep the military from missing their Oct 15 paycheck.

That and ATC/TSA increasingly short-staffed will bring resolution. No one wants our military going without pay, or planes falling out of the sky.

I am sickened that the White House is insinuating they may not pay federal workers back wages when Trump himself signed the bill saying feds would be paid.
No wonder noone trusts this administration

Is the government still shut down? No one seems to be talking about it like they did last time, when it was a very big deal. I don't understand what's happening now. Did they fire people already so it's no longer a shut down just a layoff?

This isn't about the Epstein files. This is about fascism.

Yes, the government is still shut down. This is why I'm on DCUM instead of working right now. To my knowledge nobody has been fired yet.

Word is, Senators are trying to find a way to carve out military spending. If Dems agree, they are basically saying, "I agree to fund the military to invade American cities and terrorize residents."
