Official Kamala Harris VP Thread

Compared to the others in the running, I feel like he's been as quiet as a mouse.

Several people online said that Kelly looks like an angry walnut in a way relatable to the millions of angry walnut looking fellas across the country. It’s certainly accurate (in a good way).

What great experience does Vance have?

Beshear isn’t the best person to make the argument is the point.

he has three times as much electoral experience as Vance, all of it executive!

But too green. Better than Vance certainly but he would undermine the inexperience argument they’re focusing on right now.

He's on his second term as KY guv. He won in a red state. Trump lost the popular vote on his successful run and Vance won by a few points. Their collective service is 5 1/2 years. Beshear himself has nearly double the service as a state executive in addition to his 3 years as state AG.

Do we need two former AGs? I feel like Walz has a far more compelling identity as an educator.

No one cares about that quibble except some nerds inside The Beltway. Jeez. The voters can barely focus on policy debates.

A politician's identity is huge, hardly a quibble. A public HS social studies teacher going after book banners, school vouchers, and Republican anti-intellectuals writ large is undoubtedly effective.

He looks like every young dad on the golf course on Saturday morning and she looks like an Instagram mom. These are prime suburban and exurban voters who culturally trend toward Trump based on their peer group's inclinations but are swayable.

Not the worst choice. He also looks young, so he makes Harris look a bit more senior and wizened.

They’re a bit Stepford-looking for me. That Southern country club look. I don’t find them relatable.

Well, you're one vote. I'm not big on the Southern country club look either but bully to Beshear for getting elected twice - TWICE - in red KY!

They got mine, even if they went to cotillion.

That's not saying much. The point is that he is young for the "ready on day one" argument they supposedly want to make. Maybe they've decided to pivot. Who knows what internal polling shows is most effective.

This is the debate Beshear had with question to abortion. He sounds reasonable to me and vetoed a law in Kentucky that would’ve banned at 15 weeks.

Like Kelly a lot. He fought in Desert Storm then pivoted to NASA. He is not a natural campaigner by any stretch. I was on a few donor calls with him in '20. I understand he has improved, but he doesn't have the jugular instinct that Beshear, Shapiro, and Walz do.

Here's the story, dated today, saying the finalists are Shapiro, Walz, and Kelly. Anyone have a subscription?

That article was published before (11am) the cryptic Tweet by Beshear (12:15pm).

The cryptic tweet could mean anything. Always possible "sources close to the process" misdirected the Bloomberg journalists, I suppose, but to what end?

It's also the cryptic tweet is capping off the effort, after being informed he's out. I mean, who knows at this point?

Hmm, could be. His social media appears to be entirely Kentucky-focused, with multiple posts in the last day. Is it odd he hasn't been using his platform to promote Harris?

Lol, oh I agree. Not my first choice, but I will wholly support if selected.

Against Vance, I'm not sure Harris' VP will need to go for the jugular. Vance does his own damage to himself.

I don't think a national campaign suits his strengths, and also might be hard on Gabby. If he's not chosen, he's doing more than enough by holding his seat and I hope the veep exposure has helped him.

No, it's not odd. Voicing support for the Democratic nominee is what elected Democrats do in an election year, even more so when they're on the VP shortlist. Even if Beshear isn't the VP pick this year, he has a larger political future ahead of him and it makes sense to get his name out there on the national stage.

Unlike Kaine in 2016 (Kaine is my Senator and I love him, but), who couldn't stop talking about Virginia when he needed to be broadening his message for a national election, Beshear is demonstrating that he is KY-focused and also knows how to bring it nationally.

Just checked. Not a single post promoting Harris? Not one? Does seem odd to me. I also don't see the tweet that was referred to upthread.

Ok, my best guess now is that the Bloomberg story was correct and that he was floated in large part to boost his profile as a rising star in the party.

He has two Twitter accounts - one is the official Governor account, where I don't see any posts in support of Harris. The other is his personal/professional account, where he HAS endorsed her and is posting about her frequently. That's totally normal for elected officials. One account for the work of their elected position and one account for campaigning.
