Poor guy can’t leave NC, or the women in his state lose their reproductive rights. He did the right thing.

Either that or he doesn’t want to be on a losing ticket.

Harris will beat Trump.

She'll hit Biden's coalition numbers and percentages with more upside with women and nonwhites. Pick any of Kelly, Shapiro, or Beshear for VP and it's a wrap.

Vance is a downright awful VP pick.

Compared to the others in the running, I feel like he's been as quiet as a mouse.

Like Kelly a lot. He fought in Desert Storm then pivoted to NASA. He is not a natural campaigner by any stretch. I was on a few donor calls with him in '20. I understand he has improved, but he doesn't have the jugular instinct that Beshear, Shapiro, and Walz do.

Against Vance, I'm not sure Harris' VP will need to go for the jugular. Vance does his own damage to himself.

I worry that Vance, a trained lawyer, could dance rings around a Kelly. Kelly's honest, plainspoken demeanor could effectively counter, I hope, but I'm not entirely sure about how he'd do. I have more confidence in Shapiro, Walz, Beshear. Anyway, doubt they'll risk Kelly's seat. If the Bloomberg story is correct, probably between Shapiro and Walz really. Both great in different ways.

Here's the story, dated today, saying the finalists are Shapiro, Walz, and Kelly. Anyone have a subscription?
https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-07-27/kamala-harris-vice-presidential-search-focuses-on-3-candidates

That article was published before (11am) the cryptic Tweet by Beshear (12:15pm).

The cryptic tweet could mean anything. Always possible "sources close to the process" misdirected the Bloomberg journalists, I suppose, but to what end?

It's also the cryptic tweet is capping off the effort, after being informed he's out. I mean, who knows at this point?

Hmm, could be. His social media appears to be entirely Kentucky-focused, with multiple posts in the last day. Is it odd he hasn't been using his platform to promote Harris?

Just checked. Not a single post promoting Harris? Not one? Does seem odd to me. I also don't see the tweet that was referred to upthread.

Ok, my best guess now is that the Bloomberg story was correct and that he was floated in large part to boost his profile as a rising star in the party.

He has two Twitter accounts - one is the official Governor account, where I don't see any posts in support of Harris. The other is his personal/professional account, where he HAS endorsed her and is posting about her frequently. That's totally normal for elected officials. One account for the work of their elected position and one account for campaigning.

Ah okay, thanks!

Eh. Has Vance ever practiced law, let along litigation? Sure, he's been trained to think like a lawyer, but Kelly has been trained to command men. I think that makes it at least an equal fight, leaving alone Vance's temper and tendency to put his foot in his mouth.

It sounds like some skeletons were uncovered in Beshear’s closet and now he’s having to publicly profess his undying love to his wife.

I really want this to be the case, and certainly think Kelly's integrity would shine through!

Ugh the Dems are about to ruin their chances again. Tim waltz is only 60 but he looks like like he’s 80. Many swing state voters see Minnesota as a state that is so left leaning it’s practically communist. Kelly is very ugly and will scare off low information voters. Josh Shapiro is the only good option and Kamala will lose if they don’t pick him.

No, I think they're just emotional because he's been ruled out. If that's the case, he has a brilliant future and this only helped him.

His wife is Britainy.

Really?

Shapiro is also very ethnic looking.

No good options.

Really disagree with your assessment. Actually think any of the three would probably be fine, but a little worried it's risky for Kamala to pick a Jewish running mate (as has been covered as nauseam upthread). Even aside from current Middle East politics, have the last several years not made it clear that there is horrible antisemitism in this country?

Geez, Walz is 60??

He looks old as Biden.

This is a troll. Despair is a weapon, but we can choose not to let us touch us.

I have yet to see him dance rings around anything. Even softball questions from sympathetic Fox anchors trying to help him dig himself out of a hole haven't ended with him dancing.
Agree with you, generally, though that the potential loss of Kelly's seat is a big strike against him as the pick. Not worth the risk with so many other good options.

Walz or Kelly are great options, as far as regular-Joe swing state appeal.
