So, I previously lost a lot of weight(55lbs) and hit my target in about 6 months by calorie counting low carb diet, and exercise that involves cardio. I don't do weights or gym, exercise is mainly brisk walking and other hiit exercises at home. This was about 4 yrs ago.
So, the problem is this- once I was at a maintenance stage I noticed that my weight would go up or down 10 lbs especially during holiday, that's fine with me. But the issue that I have is when I have pains that feel like pulled muscles specifically around my butt or hips that lasts for weeks and preventing me from doing my usual exercises, I also noticed that this happens mostly when we have a change in season. It got so bad that now I gained back 30 lbs because of the combination of holidays and lack of exercise. Anyone else experiencing this or have gone through this? Any tips on how I should get my exercises when I have these issues? I realized that I need to have exercise and diet at the same time if I want to maintain weight. I'm currently workung on losing weight again but I want to have a solution on these issues to avoid weight gain again. |
See a PT and an ortho. You probably have some alignment issues that are exacerbated by extra weight. Your ortho can do some scans that will help pinpoint the issues, and a PT can give you some functional exercises to help relieve any pain you are feeling. They may also be able to ensure that the walking and HIIT exercises you are doing are in proper alignment and not creating the problem or making it worse.
The fact that the pain is around your hips and butt really speak to any alignment issue. When you have hip alignment issues, added weight can make them a lot worse by limiting joint mobility or just putting more pressure on the joints. That's probably what's going on. It's the sort of problem that can get worse with age, so addressing it now is really valuable preventative care that will help you stay active and healthy moving forward. |
Definitely see a PT. I need to do regular strengthening to avoid pains like this. |
Try a water workout during your recovery times. They are much easier on the body. |
Same. For me, I had to hip and glute strengthening when most of my exercise was walking and other aerobic exercise resulted pain. Taking time off doesn't solve the issue. |
OP here. Sorry I wasn't clear. The exercises are not causing the pain. It's whenever my period is about to start and muscles might be loosening up? not sure if that is a thing, but it consistently happens around that time, it's worse when coupled by change in season, it's like a sciatica pain/ pulled muscle on the butt cheek and it takes weeks of multiple daily stretches to make it better, which means I cannot exercise either. Is that something that PT and the other specialist could help with? I guess when I lost weight something loosened up, because I noticed it more after list weight. |
Yes, a PT will do a thorough evaluation and give you exercises to help with this. |
Yes, see a PT. If it is preventing you from exercising, see a PT. Also, if there is sciatic pain, see an ortho. Again, this is the kind of thing that tends to get worse over time, not better. |
Yes, a PT. I learned that focusing on strength vs over stretching was actually what my body needed. I do mobility work to warm up, then strength, then light stretching to cool down. |
A PT can definitely help. They will give you exercises that strengthen muscles that need to be strengthened, and stretching those that need to be stretched. They are extremely good at pinpointing even very tiny muscles that you may not know about. You may be stretching/strengthening the wrong ones.
I always considered myself a healthy person, was a daily walker and yoga doer, but PT was utterly life changing. |
+1 to all the recommendations to see a PT. See if your gym has one/group they work with. I found it most helpful. |
No one can diagnose you except your doctor. Maybe you have arthritis in your hip? |
Yes. PT will help you strengthen the muscles and give you preventative stretches to help avoid this. |
You may have a torn glut muscle that you aren’t giving a chance to heal completely.
Also start doing a weight circuit, weight HIIT routine. Pounds will fall off. |
If you do need to stop exercising regularly then you need to eat less. |
