| 8 and 8:30 am. I know MCPS delayed to 7:45 several years ago. But is that enough? |
They already went over this and the problem is that changing high school times would negatively impact elementary and middle school times |
| The way the bus routes are stacked for four runs now makes any further change to compress start times require adding busses. Personally, I’d like to see them add public bus routes or create express busses in the mornings and afternoons that could accommodate the high schools and middle schools in the denser areas of the county, then shift those buses to the less dense areas. Push back HS start time to the same as MS time. Stagger arrival a little more with multiple busses a few minutes apart at peak times. It’s the most likely way to get a change IMO. |
Blah blah blah.I spent years and years waiting for elementary school to start at 9:25. My kids would get up at 6:30 and there almost 3 hours til school started. Send those kids to school earlier! |
Seriously. If they are concerned about health, the High School and elementary school start times should be flipped. |
| I’d sort of think that MCPS high schools are closer together (at least down county) so a 7:45 MCPS start and 8 Howard or AA start are splitting hairs with bus times and pickups. |
I thought the problem was that there was a significant number of families who depend on high school and middle school kids being dismissed before elementary kids so they can watch younger siblings, and that’s why they can’t switch high school and elementary start times. |
Flipping HS and ES were not even considered. The main reasons were not enough time for high school ECs, high schoolers need to be available to babysit younger siblings, and highschoolers need to work after school. |
Seriously. Loudoun County does this (Elementary @ 7:50, Middle @ 8:50, HS @ 9:30). We love it. |
Charlottesville schools flipped HS and ES many years ago. Extra curriculars happened before school started versus after. |
Yes, this was one of the reasons. |
For the life of me, I don't understand why there isn't more discussion about or opposition to late elementary school start times. Maybe some kids sleep later, but I'm with the PP who had my kids up before 7:00 a.m. every day even though school started at 9:25 a.m. It's not like kids can go to the park or run around in the morning without needing a shower, so these start times force sedentary activities before school and leave little time after school for family or play. |
Bus routes. LOL and who claimed nothing could be done? Same guy who embezzled millions from MCPS and refused to comply with state audit recommendations to make MCPS bus routes more efficient. |
If extracurriculars happen before school, doesn't that defeat the whole purpose of this initiative which is to give teenagers more time to sleep in? |
| Yes, move start times later for high school and also cancel all after school activities because they'll be so late that you know who cares... |
