Based on this forum, it seems like it was a harder year than most for admission, but it’s hard to tell from all the anecdotal stories.
Using one word to survey, would you describe your current mood as 1) thrilled, 2) pleased, 3) satisfied/ neurtral, 4) disappointed, or 5) devastated? We are (4) disappointed but largely because GDS was our first choice school and admissions seems to have been nearly impossible for unhooked kids due to their enrollment restrictions this year. Bummed this happened the year we applied but ultimately ok with where we’ll be next year. We’ll probably try again in the future and wish that wasn’t necessary. |

1) Thrilled!
7th grade. Didn’t get into all, but got into first choice. Really happy and relieved. |

Devastated. Daughter was waitlisted everywhere. She's desperately unhappy at her current school (public) so we were very much hoping private would provide an exit strategy. We're starting to discuss potential alternatives (i.e. moving) but all of our options suck.

| I have two different kids who went through the process. I am thrilled for my pre-k kid because she got in everywhere (except GDS where she was waitlisted) and had loads of great options. For my rising fourth grader, I am a 3. She has great options as well but got waitlisted at her top two choices. Given that there were far less spots for 4th, I wouldn't put myself at 4 or 5 because I know there are kids who got completely shut out and that didn't happen to us. |
I’m really sorry to hear this. |
I'm very sorry. Can she apply again next year? We tried our kid out of public mid-middle school and it turned out to be a multi-year plan. We were waitlisted year one and then got in year 2. There are just so few private spots that it's hard to move out of public in middle school and beyond. I know many families who tried multiple times (6th, 7th) and finally got out for 9th. These were kids with all the top grades, etc. It's not easy to get a spot. |
| Really disappointed. Coming from a private k-8 and applied to 4 schools, not the ultra competitive big 3. Other DC at big 3 and I knew it was not for younger DC. Got into 1 and waitlisted at 3. The one DC got into was our 3rd choice. |
So for your pre-K? Did your pre-k child get into Sidwell? |
Yes, I recognize PP from posts on other threads |

I’d say a 4.5. Not a 5 because we got into a fine school. However, given the fact that there was a rejection from our by far number one choice and two waitlists that would put me in about a 4.5.
4.5 here |
| I would say 1) Thrilled. DS applied to 4 schools for the 9th and was accepted to all 4. He is coming from public and was not a legacy or recruited athlete. So, from what I have been seeing on DCUM this is an almost impossible outcome. Now its extremely hard trying to get him to make a choice so we can send rejections to free up the spot as soon as possible so other deserving kids can gain acceptance. |
What grade is your daughter in and why is she unhappy? |
|
Pleased.
More aid would have been nice, but my kid — who hasn’t heard the news yet — is going to go bonkers when he learns he got into his favorite school. Waitlisted everywhere else, but having his top choice for MS see what we see in him (a shy, reserved, quirky and very sweet human) thrills me to no end. |
Your DS sounds awesome! I hope he absolutely thrives wherever he attends! |
We're in the same boat. Considering homeschooling with some other families for a year and reapplying next year. |
