Cars Blocking the Bike Lane

Anonymous
Now that we are getting some decent pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure in DC, drivers still act as if the entire road is there. Commuting in this morning I had to go around and into traffic b/c two cars were blocking the bike lane. One had pulled into it to go around other traffic, cutting me off, and got oussecwgej I tapped her car and pointed to the bike lane sign. The other was an Uber driver waiting for a fare - they’re the worst. I really hope DC steps enforcement of drivers in cars entering the bike lanes.

This again? Sigh

Honestly this is why we need protected (with concrete curbs or bollards) bike lanes. Paint is not protection and many drivers just have zero regard for other road users and while it would be nice to rely on enforcement or people actually adhering to signs that jsut isn’t the way the world works.

In DC everything off-limits to cars has to be physically protected with concrete or bollards, or they will go to there. We just don't enforce enough.

If you touched my car or even tried to talk to me I would likely get out of my car and walk up to you with the goal of getting you arrested. You can't tap people's cars or even gesture towards them -- where the hell did you grow up. Not Boston or NY. Just slow down and wait.

Take away traffic lanes and the Ubers and delivery trucks still have to wait somewhere. I know this angers people but it is the nature of things.

I have gotten stuck behind bikers in the car lanes so... and you tapped someone's car and pointed to bike lane sign? This is why nobody likes you bike people

This is unhinged. You are in such a hurry that you block people’s way instead of taking a age minutes to find a legal place to park your car. But then you have time to get out of your car if someone (horrors!) touched your car or glances at you wrong. Car brain is crazy man.

Also in New York if you block pedestrians you will absolutely get your car tapped or worse. Lol at the idea that New Yorkers are going to defer to people stupid enough to drive cars in the city.

Cars often get stuck waiting for Uber drivers to get a fare. It is not a bike only thing.

You would really act this way if someone tapped your car? PP, get yourself into therapy, quick.

So are you calling for a strike against Uber?

I love/hate of Uber. I use Uber, but at least with identifiable taxis when you were driving behind them you could prepare yourself for them to suddenly stop in the middle of the street without warning.

I have seen so many times when there was actually a parking spot (or place to pull over) literally three feet away, but the Uber driver still decided to stop in the middle of the lane or halfway across the lane and halfway in a bike lane to wait for a fare or to drop someone off.

Why are you in such a hurry? Why don't you just wait until the driver gets back? Would it kill you if it took 2 minutes more to get to work?

I don’t think most people bikers included would like rules if enforced.

My old quiet town became a cut through around 40 years ago. Over time they fought back and made entire town a no standing zone. We do get bikers who love it as less traffic.

But do you know that that means no standing, taxis, Amazon, Uber eats, fedex, UPS, food deliveries can only park in your driveway.

We do give a permit for landscapers trucks and the village if you register a vehicle as a guest can get a parking pass.

We once had a traffic jam and we ticketed everyone stuck in traffic. No stopping. At one point we tried a pedestrian and bike toll for non residents. We have a toll already on one side of town that is short cut.

I think bikes and cars don’t belong in the street
