I think we aren’t getting the full scope from the Chinese Communist government.

It’s political, folks.

WHO HQ is in China. You aren’t.

Something to consider though regarding death rates - it spread through the the hospital in Wuhan and those patients admitted there prior were already compromised. That could easily account for the high death rate there.

I didn’t mean to post you aren’t. I meant to say that WHO HQ is in China and you are correct!

US is still sitting at 5 cases despite the fact that those 5 were on flights with hundreds of others, moved thru airports etc. Fingers crossed this continues.

Yes, that is good news for now and let's hope that it will stay that way.
Thank you PP

Something else to think about — the longest incubation period I’ve heard is 14 days with the Chinese saying it can be transmitted without symptoms and CDC saying no evidence that it can be transmitted by the asymptomatic. In either case the first case in Washington state flew in 1/15 — on a flight with hundreds of others, walked thru SeaTac and took some sort of transport home (didn’t drive himself). So if we get past the middle of this wk which will be 14 days and there aren’t a bunch of confirmed cases in/around Washington state from ppl on that flight, at the airport etc — then that’ll be a good data point re the fact that it isn’t easily spread just by being on the same flight w someone who develops it later. Again fingers crossed.

That is a very good point PP. Thanks.

Yes good point

Agreed. That would be a sign
.

WHO not recommending evacuations posted a few mins ago. https://www.cnbc.com/amp/2020/01/28/reuters-america-wrapup-5-china-says-who-chief-against-virus-related-evacuations-as-countries-plan-pull-outs.html

WHO’s HQ is in China. Don’t expect anything but compromise

The part of WHO that’s putting out the info is in China

Not sure if this has been posted, I haven't read the full thread, but this article suggests children may be at a decreased risk of developing severe symptoms - https://foreignpolicy.com/2020/01/26/2019-ncov-china-epidemic-pandemic-the-wuhan-coronavirus-a-tentative-clinical-profile/

It sounds pretty speculative, but if true that would be good news.

Huh?

W.H.O. is publishing information from their HQ. They receive reports from their field offices and the public health offices of various countries who are members. It's reviewed, collated and published on WHO's website. https://www.who.int/emergencies/diseases/novel-coronavirus-2019

If you want to say "W.H.O. is publishing Chinese government data" well yeah, that's where they get their data--from government health departments, along with their own people. That's kind of the same everywhere--US health statistics from US health officials, UK from UK, etc.

But if you want to say everything from WHO is coming out of the field office in China, well that's just a bit off.

A nine month old baby died.

The man who contracted it in Germany had not been to China. He’s the first.

Also a Japanese man contracted the virus from a tour group from Wuhan, not from being in China.

Two H2H transmissions outside of China.

Clearly, this virus has already spread globally, and I'm pessimistic that it will be successfully contained. I just hope it proves to be less robust/fatal than MERS and SARS.
Anonymous
Most of the people in Wuhan who have died have been over 60. But there are plenty of areas in China where most of the people are over 60. I'm not sure that's as reassuring as it sounds.

There's also a bus driver in Japan who drove a tour bus of tourists from Wuhan. He went to the doctor at least a week ago and was sent home. He got worse and is now hospitalized, and just came back positive for the virus.

Citation please. Everything I read is that she alive and is the youngest to contract it. She is in Beijing. I've seen no reports on her passing.

+1. I can't see anything saying she has died.

Yes...my husband said Home Depot has been picked through. There's already major price gouging on Amazon too. Hopefully, this will end up like ebola or zika, and not have a major impact on this country.

Doesn’t Wuhan have some kind of experimental laboratory where this may have started?

If anything, the complete lack of any sensible commentary on this thread comforts me that the coronavirus is really NBD.
