Tell me, do you think all of these causes you list are unique to the US?

Different poster, but no - they aren't common to the U.S., however gun ownership rates are also not consistently tied to higher murder rates. Russia has a very high violent crime rate, but little to no firearms. The root cause IS the issue, but gun availability (the tool used) does make it easier to commit murder.

The real question is freedom vs. safety. I vote for freedom and always will, even at the risk to my kids and myself. That is the price of freedom. Nothing in life that is worth something is risk-free. Amazing how many people still think the opposite. However, if you think the loss of freedom to carry for law-abiding citizens is less important than the safety of a low percentage of the overall population who are murdered randomly in a mass shooting (extremely low percentage) then that is your right to have that opinion and to try to convince others and politicians of that belief. I'd prefer to have government go after the root cause of most gun-related murders (drugs, gangs, crime) than ban or confiscate arms from the rest of us over a small percentage deaths due to glorified mass shootings, the glorification of which urges future acts of a similar nature. Meanwhile, in the rest of the US, a lot more black men were killed in gang/drug related shootings this week with no moral outrage.

freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose

I bet you are rich. If you were not, you would know that nobody is free.

Tell that to the North Koreans.

Lol like the republicans are against what goes on in North Korea. Republicans want that here. Why do you think they stormed the Capitol to install trump?

Blame it on the rock. Or the lock.

Definitely wasn’t the weapon designed to slaughter people.

There should never have been a rock.

If only the teachers were armed. They could have shot the rock…well it would depend on if the rock was armed. If armed look for a police cover up…maybe blame the 911 call center?

Correct. Low-brow fascists.

A long time ago, I used to work with a guy who grew up in Nazi Germany. He described the early adherents to Naziism as "losers." German accent: "Deese were duh guys with not much going for demselves. Duh guys who wanted to feel important."

Early on, most people thought they were kind of a joke, he said: "But it just kept going."

This is why I am concerned. They were emboldened enough to attack the Capital and try to overthrow an election.

Im not sure why they want all the assault weapons and ammo, and why they are ok with the murdering of innocent kids and shoppers and doctors and teachers to keep all the assault weapons and ammo.

Because they are fascists. That's not hyperbole. That's the new Republican Party. They are fascists.

As we see, there are plenty of angry, threatened, scared men who will support fascism, but will many women?

Can we stick to the Uvalde massacre, which is the subject of the thread? Start a new thread on republicans vs. democrats if you wish.

Anyone seen the videos where a grandfather is confronting Uvalde cops? He pulls out a little pocket knife and taunts the cops, asking if they'll shoot him for waving the little pocket knife around, ‘Let’s see how brave you all are with your guns!' Cops look like they really, really want to beat him up or shoot him, but don't do anything because multiple spectators are videotaping the exchange. It's heart rending to see this grandfather hurting. Here is an article about that exchange:

It's so sad. It's a lot easier to threaten grandparents or parents, even who have a knife or small pistol, than it is to confront a crazy man with assault rifles and enough ammo to shoot up an entire school, who wants to kill as many people as he can before he dies.

This video (above) is shocking, amazing, and maddening. People should watch it.

It's a very clear look at cowardice, dishonor and abandonment of duty by police who were simply afraid of a gunman armed with an assault rifle, and who was firing it.

In a way, the abject, paralyzing fear shown by the police is understandable. Assault weapons turn people (who get shot with them) into pink mush.

So maybe we ought to make them illegal to sell (as they were under the Assault Weapons Ban.). It's too late to do anything about the mountains of assault weapons already loose in American society and gun "seizures" are never, ever, ever going to happen.

But, via reinstitution of the Assault Weapons Ban, and the outlawing of further sales of new ones, with a concurrent outlawing of the sale of extended clips (a favorite of mass shooters, more bullets meaning more victims) we might get fewer mass shootings and when they happen (because they will) fewer victims.

Republicans oppose this. If you oppose this, and are think recurring mass shootings in schools and other places are no big deal and just fine with you, vote Republican.

The Democrats aren't perfect but they're not the Republicans who are apologists and enablers for the gun industry and, by extension, mass shooters.

Oh they can win the senate but they will not over do away with the filibuster. The dems are uninterested in gun control.

The only plus: Republicans are killing each other faster than they are killing the rest of us.
