Working out first thing am, eat or not?

I have a high protein yogurt or cottage cheese before going to bed. (I’ve always needed a milk product even before starting new strength building routine to help me sleep.) I’m not hungry in the morning and am fine doing my 30 min strength training on coffee, then having high protein breakfast after. Should I eat before? Again, not really hungry and I workout is fairly short but intense.

No, you don’t need to.

It’s actually better to exercise on an empty stomach. I never eat before a workout in the morning, as long as I’m done with my workout before 9. If I’m working out later in the morning, then I’ll have breakfast, as long as there is at least a 2 hr window from when I ate last

I work out in the morning, and don't eat prior. I have my coffee with heavy cream and Vital Proteins collagen powder (which has protein), and I'm on my way. I don't actually eat until around 11am and my first meal is protein heavy - usually 2 eggs with a side of berries or a side of cherry tomatoes. I like the balance and contrast of flavors between the eggs and fruit.

I don’t eat before a morning workout. Water only.

OP here. I’ve just learned that Vital Proteins isn’t complete protein and doesn’t count. Neither does the protein in bone broth since both are only collagen. I now use a whey supplement directly post workout then shower and eat breakfast.

You definitely don’t need it. Amateur endurance athletes routinely do 2-2.5 hours with some supplemental fuel an hour or so in immediately in the morning all the time. I sometimes will have a banana and a stroop waffle energy product which is only like 200 calories just to feel like I’m not totally empty but it isn’t necessary.

Breakfast and coffee is definitely way better after all that.

Are you female? I just finished reading Dr Stacy Simms book. She says that women should eat before and after workout because of cortisol levels.

I’m viewing food and exercise as fueling and refueling. I’ve been focusing on simple carb before such as banana with a small amount of almond butter and after with tart cherry juice (muscle soreness) with protein powder creatine smoothie.

It’s been working well

I don’t like eating pre workouts in the morning. Feel so much better fasted.

If you don’t feel like it, you don’t need to. I need a little something before my morning workouts - always have. It also helps me keep down all the water I usually drink (too much on an empty stomach makes me nauseated).

I don’t feel good if I eat first. So, just have water while I work out and coffee/food afterwards.

I drink coffee and then workout. Eat later.

There is no right it wrong approach. How do you feel working out without eating? Do you have energy and feel good? That is really all that matters. I never eat before a morning working because I’m not hungry and feel fine exercising on an empty stomach. .
