Republicans and the debt ceiling

So according to KJP, we should raise the debt ceiling and give Biden whatever he wants because otherwise some adults might have to pay back their student loans. Ridiculous. This is not something most people support. So tone deaf. So out of touch.

If the Republicans didn’t have the culture war, they’d be toast. Their entire economic agenda is about helping billionaires become wealthier.

Ok, we’re defaulting on our obligations. Tell granny to stuff it. Also, tell her doctors to stuff it too. Oh, and tell the defense contractors to keep the goods coming despite a lack of resources. You make a distinction with little difference. We need a functioning government.

A functioning government has a plan on paying these 'obligations' based on a priority basis. And guess what.. granny, her doctor and my social security retirement will all be paid based on current revenue.

Why should Biden pay for your SS or your doctor?

Last time I checked I paid into the social security system... as for granny and her doctor, that's your problem

Too bad. Republicans won't raise the debt ceiling so there's not enough cash to go around. You get nothing.

Bless your little heart, sweetheart... at the $350 billion in revenue level Treasury takes in monthly, all confiscatory spending (80% of current levels) are covered. Nice try though

Interesting the GOP proposal isn't cutting anything from the budget, rather capping inflation at 1% per year...

Here’s an example of a world run by Republicans. People with pre-existing health conditions cannot get health insurance. Sole proprietors pay enormous sums to provide only catastrophic health insurance for their families. The elderly, 50% of whom are indignant, live on the streets or with their family, but cannot afford healthcare. Life expectancy for the average person is 70.

It is, actually.

....And, we all plan to push granny off a cliff.

Your apocalyptic example is old, tired, and totally false.

So when inflation is closer to 3 or 4 percent for a few years in a row what happens? Social security has built in COLAs so it will continue to eat more of the pie. Republicans will never let military increases fall below inflation. Medicare rates will have to rise with inflation. If democrats agree to this, they'll wake up and realize they've cut the programs that they like by the 20%+ that republicans originally wanted

What do you think happens without social security? How many years did republicans try to get pre-existing conditions coverage revoked? Why do republicans not like being reminded of their own platform?

Why do you think your check won't be in the 20% that isn't covered?

The debt ceiling isn't about "whatever he wants" - that is the budget. The debt ceiling is about paying for the Trump tax cuts and other debt inducing expenditures.

I just posted the Mammouth poll. 75% of Americans disagree with the GOP tactics.

Catastrophic health insurance is not enormous cost. What is enormous cost is the self employed having to buy insurance now. Went from hundreds of dollars a month to thousands of dollars a month.

Eliminate religious exemptions for churches that engage in politics and for those which do not help the poor and others in need. 15% minimum tax for any corporation doing $100m or more in business. Greatly tighten fiscal oversight and accountability in DOD/IC. Crack down on medicare fraud.
Negotiate better deals for pharma and healthcare via Medicare, VA, federal blue cross and other providers, and publish the negotiated rates so that other private sector insurers can demand the same.

Things like that will get us trillions and significantly reduce, if not completely balance the budget.

My lazy question for this thread is does anyone know what the demands are from repubs to raise the debt ceiling? I know it’s been a shifting situation where they change demands.

I haven’t done a deep dive into what they are asking for now. Is the main one that they want to rescind the IRS $80bn?

I know Google is my friend, but wondering if someone can offer a quick synopsis. Thank you.

Something like that. And cut all the subsidies and tax credits for renewable energy, and any carbon taxes that were passed. Would like to keep gas stoves and the current dishwashers.
It also depends on what you mean by Republicans. Eventually McConnell will cut a deal because he doesn't want to cut spending much, his donors need to get their money's worth.
