So much for hoping that enough Dems would cross over to vote for Sully and send a message. I thought maybe he would get 40-45% like Hogan did.
Nope, Elrich wins with a 72% mandate. And we have a decisively left wing council. Only Friedson and maybe Katz are moderate. The newcomers like Fani-Gonzalez, Kate Stewart (Takoma Park always having its way) and especially Kristin Mink are just wow. If you’re a moderate, what do we do now? The county government are soon going to realize they’ll run out of money to woke-ify everything. Have we lost our last chance to hit the reset button and focus on bringing businesses and jobs other than Racial Equity Commissar of Justice Task Force Analyst? I’m glad that crazy Republicans lost nationally but I’m deeply concerned about the hard left turn locally. |
| Hold on to your wallet I guess. The endless line up of free stuff is coming from you. |
| I agree with you 100% OP. It looks like we are in the minority. Either that or people didn't vote who would agree with us. |
| The only thing you can do to limit or minimize the potential harm is to engage them frequently on focus on fiscal responsibility. You need to both write your officials frequently and encourage others to do so as well to remind them that fiscal responsibility is critically important for the future of this county. In local politics, the squeaky wheel gets the grease, so you need to be active and make sure others are as well providing frequent reminders. |

Step 1: Stop putting your hopes on the general election. Only Democrats win County Executive in MoCo. The time to make a change was in the primary.
Step 2: Identify the issues that actually impact you personally, and speak to your elected officials about those issues. Step 3: If it is so bad that you'd rather live in a more "balanced" jurisdiction, then move there. Personally I like places run by people who don't hate transgender people and support abortion rights, so I'm pretty thankful to be living here. |
| I’m a democrat. I did not vote for Elrich in the primary and voted R yesterday to get him out. I guess it didn’t work but I tried. This is why everyone needs to vote. |
This. I don't like Elrich, but did you really think Sullivan had a chance? The primary is where the fight is in MoCo. Anyone who defines themselves as an independent or moderate should register as a democrat to have their voice heard. Hell, even hard-core republicans would be wise to register as democrats to have a better chance of having an impact. Being registered as an independent or republican in MoCo is a waste - you are throwing away your vote. The Council is actually pretty responsive to citizen feedback. It's just that 90% of the feedback they get comes from the Takoma Park/Silver Spring crowd. Get involved! And yes, even though I'm not quite as far left as most of our county representatives, I would still rather be here than most other places. My only real problem with MoCo politics is the failing business environment. I'm a huge fan of social equity programs, but Council does seem to forget that we need stable businesses in the County to form a solid tax base. |

Elrich IS a moderate but you're American, so you can't see it. The entire political spectrum is the US goes from extreme right to moderate left. As a European, I know this. I've lived in countries with socialist parties in power.
You have no idea. Please don't whine too much, lest a real left-wing group gain power one day. And if that day comes, you might actually have affordable medications, great healthcare that doesn't cost an arm and a leg, and no guns on the street. You might like it. |
Honestly, what would make Sullivan an attractive candidate? I actually asked this question prior to the election and checked out his website. All I got was that he was “not Elrich” and that he was willing to be duplicitous in not openly and eagerly revealing his affiliation as a Republican. I respect Hogan. Sully didn’t offer much to work with in his campaign. |
This is the truth I am happy living in Montgomery county. |
| There needs to be massive property and income tax increases next year, accompanied by lots of new spending. County residents have shown they want a strong progressive local government, and they need to ante up for what they asked for now. |
| Honestly… maybe just bail? I’ve noticed MoCo has been on a slippery slope down for the past 10 years. Just look how far school ranks and ratings have dropped. Guess that’ll keep marching on. |

I hear ya OP. My family is upper middle class so I expect to pay more. But when we were victims of crime twice and when my husband lost his job for several months, there was no one was around to help. What I hate most about the current administration is the amount of $$$ wasted and not accounted for. Yet we keep electing the same people. I feel like there are so many people out there that have no clue what is going on and just vote for the most well known.
What are we going to do? My DD is graduating this year and we are moving out of state so we won’t have to deal with the awful crime. |
What sort of “help” did you want? |
Move across the river. You won't be missed
