I think I've totally lost my grip on reality.
My junior is at one of the 3 APS high schools. 4 AP classes and Intensified Science. She was pulling A's in many until the last few days, and now has dropped to all Bs and B+s in those core courses. JR also did a varsity sport this fall plus major involvment with another extra curricular, and different club sport for weekend tournaments. Reality check: They will be fine, right? I think I've gotten so freaked out lately by UVA, William and Mary, Tech admissions horror stories that I'm internally freaking out. I know that they are particularly upset about the drop in Calc AB. Please help me come to my senses before i get home from work. |
They will be fine, of course. Although they probably aren’t being admitted to those schools you cite. |
| OP here: just to add -- Arlington doesn't give a GPA bump for Intensified/honors classes, so that is a raw GPA plus just one bump for an AP in Sophomore year with all Intensified core classes. Student has taken all AP that they can in core courses (except for science this year). |
JMU is calling her name |
| There are colleges they can go to if all their grades slip to C’s. Try to disconnect from wanting any particular outcome—that’s the easiest way to avoid stressing about college. |
| Fellow parent of a student athlete with two Bs this quarter and I'm freaking out too. Really hoping colleges will take into account just how much time the varsity sports demand. |
|
Your DC should tell their story. Whatever happens this semester, if DC feels the need to address it in the app, do so.
Also, colleges will know your DC's school & that Arlington doesn't give a bump, etc. Use the essay or other questions to answer any issues with grades, etc. |
| He'll be fine, OP. I wish my kid were in your position. I have a senior with ADHD. He has a 3.0 and a 1520 SAT. The college search has been a little tough, but we're finding some matches for him. I am very confident that it will all work out. Hang in there! |
OP here -- thanks. Good luck to your kid! They will find their right fit. |
| Relax. She's a junior, and these are first quarter grades. Colleges only see final grades from APS. My UW 4.0 (who will probably graduate with a weighted 4.4) has tons of Bs sprinkled through the past 4 years. Just make sure the final grades are A. |
| You people are effing nuts. Seriously. |
| manage your expectation, they are not going to UVA and that is fine. Let them find a place they will be happy at, everything else will work out. |
+1 There are plenty of good options. |
Good grief it is only November! Unless you are on 4x4 block schedule there is ton of time for grades to change and even if there is whole another "semester" for grades to go up. Please take a deep breath. |
+1 Also, the quarter grades do not appear on the final APS transcript. |
