FCPS new FLE curriculum

Anonymous
What happened to the thread discussing the changes to the FLE curriculum?

There was a good debate from different perspectives on the change to combine boys and girls for sex ed, and the new changes to remove sex specific clinical/biological teachings, replacing it with ambiguous and non scientific "sex assigned at birth" type language.

It is a shame that an important discussion by parents appears to have been deleted.

I assume it was deleted because there was a lot of misinformation.

I hope many parents will take the time to learn about these changes. They aren’t being advertised.

are these proposed changes definitely happening? Or is there a way to stop this?

There is a comment period. But if you look at the documents the changes were approved by the working committee nearly unanimously across the board, so I’d say odds of holding the changes off are low. I think the changes would take place next year, not this year.

This is very scary. Combing genders and discussing assigned male or female at birth opens up discussion to trans in elementary school. Not appropriate.

The proposed plan includes discussions of gender identity in elementary school. This will definitely be more than incidental references in announcements during LGBTQ+ months of October and June.

Why are we teaching FLE anyways? Shouldn't parents teach that stuff? Not everyone will agree on that stuff.

Because schools educate children and part of being educated is knowing about one's body and about other people's bodies as well.

Just look at this website on FLE https://parentandchild.org/ I assume if these proposed changes happen, everything will be red

Maybe they should teach them to spell instead, so many other things they can teach. Why FLE? Parents can teach that stuff.

I think that FLE has some value as of today. E.g. if you look at the website above there is some useful material e.g. STDs etc which can be complementary to what we as parents would say to our kids. Of course there are some crazy stuff there and I'm opting my kids out from these crazy stuff.
But given those proposed changes, this gets out of hand, and will definitely opt out from these crazy interpretations of everything.

They should have FLE at the end of the school day, if you don't want it you can leave.

They most certianly are. I've received emails about the changed and the opportunity to review.

Because many parents don't! My mom got pregnant at 15 because she did not know what sex was or how pregnancy happened! Her parents would not speak of it and it was not taught in her Catholic schools.
