What home workout equipment do you own and do you use it?

DH wants to create a home gym with a treadmill and elliptical and weights. I’m afraid it won’t get used. Please share your experience with home gym equipment. Are we better off getting a gym membership?

If you like your equipment, please share your recommendations.

I love having my own workout equipment. But - I am dedicated to exercising and would go to a gym if we didn't have our own things. I use the treadmill the most, and we also have some free weights that we all use. We have an elliptical but I don't use it as often. We bought all of our equipment used from Craigslist.

It really is a personal thing. What would you use? What do you like to do? If at all possible, try out equipment before you buy it. An uncomfortable bike or a treadmill that is too short or slow will never be used. If you hate treadmills, you are not going to use a treadmill.

What really helped me use equipment was having a tv and wireless headphones. I would record my favorite shows and only allow myself to watch I was working out.

Simple things you can get are a jump rope, adjustable step, or more expensive - a TRX system.

We have a Peloton and a few free weights (10, 20, 30 pound dumbbells). I use all regularly, though I’ve gone through periods of using them more or less often. But, I’m also extremely disciplined about exercising daily. If you’re not, you’ll probably be better off with something that forces you into it, at least until you build the habit.

I love my LesMills weight set. I use it on demand when I can’t make it to the gym

I have a rowing machine. It took me a long time to use it but now I do.

I have a hydrow rower that I use a lot.

A treadmill and elliptical seems like a lot of overlap. I sometimes wish I had a weight setup but then I remember I weigh plenty and do some bodyweight exercises.

I feel like there is no rhyme or reason to what we use and what we don't.

I never liked the stationary bike and I really like the gym, so I was shocked to discover that I'm the one who uses the peloton most frequently, almost daily. I love hand weights at the gym but I rarely use ours at home, although hopefully that will change when we get our little rack set up. I use the Pilates circle a lot, and DH uses those band things daily. The treadmill doesn't used a lot, but probably enough to justify buying it. DH is the only one who uses it and uses it only a couple of times a month, but he also doesn't have a gym membership that is going to waste.

I keep my gym membership because I like a few machines there, the elliptical, and for some reason I do my free weight exercises there more regularly than I do at home. But it's 40 dollars a month so I don't feel like it's a waste to have that and equipment at home.

I have a fake peloton set up (I use the app with a sunny fitness bike) and a pilates reformer. Use one or the other daily.

Weights, resistance bands, and yoga blocks and mat. All get used. Shopping for a rower which DH says he’ll also use, so we’ll see…

Elliptical machine. I have used it for 20 years 5X a week. ❤️

We have a NordicTrack bike and rowing machine (we use iFit), and free weights and a weight bench. I would have your husband start with one piece of equipment and add as needed.

I use my Les Mills weight set and also have ballet equipment setup. I’ve not gone back to in person classes. I use each of them twice a week. So worth it.

Dumbbells, kettle bells, resistance bands, exercise ball and bosu ball. All get good use. I workout way more now than I did when I went to the gym to exercise.

We just got a treadmill and we are so happy. My husband always had some dumbbells which he uses regularly. Now I run or walk a lot more than before and can do it watching tv. I wish there was a shelf for my computer so I could walk while working!
