I am curious to know how much people's mortgage payments are. We are first time buyers and are trying to wrap our heads around what we can actually afford.
We had a $3300 (piti) when we had a household income of around 500k. We both had significant student loan payments, baby, etc. Did not live lavishly, and felt a bit pinched, but fine (and beach 9 days at higher end place, etc). HHI jumped to 8-900 and we did cash out refi and the payment is not $4500 (piti)

$2250 PITI
Bought in 2015 House cost $335k and we put $75k down Our HHI then was $120k and it's now $250k. |
PP here: I should say we are embarking on a significant expansion because we bought a too small house with an eye toward eventually adding on. It's time. We will sink 7-900 more into the addition, and still be way ahead for our neighborhood.
Mortgage is $2,600 with $305 monthly HOA. Purchased in 2021 @465k, townhouse.
4200 PITI. 15% down on an 810K home, HHI 500K. No other debt or child-care expenses. I'm glad we held off for a long time on buying a home until we felt comfortable. I know it's totally fine to stretch for some people, but I think it wouldn't have been good for our personalities and attitudes about money.
$2800 PITI. Approx $200k HHI.

$1500, HHI $150k (15y mortgage)
But was $2000, HHI 100k when we bought 14 years ago. We were just out of school and dual income when we bought. Now we are a one income family with a kid and the house is super affordable. Buying was a very good decision for us. |
$3200 PITI. HHI around 350k not including bonuses. We put 20 percent down on an 800k home 5 years ago. Bought in 2016. We do not have any debt (no student loans, cars are paid off) but did have childcare expenses for very young kids so it was a little tight at first.
$5200 15-year mortgage. Could pay off in full after we sold our old house but have such a low rate (1.75) that we decided not to. HHI $500,000
$2,800.00, 3,000sq foot house. 3 bedrooms and 5 bathrooms.
Mortgage is $1250 but I don’t escrow taxes or insurance so it would be about $1900 if I did. HHI was probably under $150k at the time and is now just over $100k due to divorce. It’s affordable.
$2900. Was $3500 when we bought in 2015 but we refi'd in 2020 - no cash out just a better rate. HHI $500, was ~$260 when we bought in 2015.
$1,168 PITI

Wow. I am a new poster and these seem so low. We currently pay $3200 (including Insurance and tax). We have 12 years left.
We are looking for a bigger home and expecting the monthly payment to double to $6500. Combined we earn $350K. |
