Letter from VHSL

Knew them rednex down there were going to uphold.
It’s going to be Oscar Smith now.

Idk. Battlefield is strong and could be the last team standing. I actually think Battlefield had a better chance of winning it all than Hayfield.

As a fan, I was looking forward to seeing Hayfield, Battlefield, and Madison clash with the best Richmond, and Tidewater teams. It’s a shame that the haters had to get involved.

The Stafford, Fredericksburg, and Charlottesville area teams shouldn’t be slept on either.

A lot of non Hayfield people were looking forward to those matchups. I do believe it all would've remained under the radar if the team moms hadn’t stated fighting. If the one team mom had given up her position quietly and accepted the new team culture, we would be none the wiser.

But now her kid gets playing time in the postseason for SoCo. So I guess she’s having the last laugh as they say.

No way. The other coaches and schools in their district were all over this in the summer already. I heard about it at a childrens birthday party in Loudoun.

HAHA. No way. Sorry if you were used to PWC families and schools looking the other way when you were all at Freedom. This would have never flown under the radar at any public FCPS HS. Its laughable that you think if one parent hadn't complained, it would all be just fine.

In addition to pointing out the 24 (wow) transfers, the letter discusses the fact that 15 Hayfield kids who played in 2023 and logically should have been playing in 2024 quit, transferred, or didn't make the "new" team for 2024. As well as pointing out how the 2024 Freedom team was decimated by all the transfers and only had 2 seniors left.

So basically VHSL is saying that Overton's shenanigans and traveling circus ruined the football seasons for two different HS teams of athletes which goes against the principles of VHSL.

I heard about it from a Hayfield teacher at a swim meet in Arlington! This story was everywhere all summer. No one could believe it had been allowed to happen.

Before reading the damning facts in the letter, I didn't realize that so many kids had transferred in the spring before spring sports. Isn't it hard to transfer in the middle of a high school year? What happens to your grades? Even if you are transferring to play football, why not finish out the school year at your previous school?

Some of them didn't transfer but they showed up for the spring football workouts which was very weird (for a huge group of kids from one high school to show up at another high school for practices).

Someone in prior posts had said transferring them was also problem because students who had been getting As and Bs no longer were and additionally impacted eligibility.

I didn’t read the letter, but if what it states is true, that does sound pretty bad, and goes against the spirit / purpose of VHSL prep sports in a most blatant way. But does that violate the VHSL code?

Sot they transferred from Freedom with As and Bs but couldn't do the Hayfield work in the same class? Man that is NOT a good look for PWC schools.

Yes, they broke the Proselytzing rule, as discussed in this thread.

On the note of team moms, what happened to the tens of thousands of dollars collected by the new team mom, using an outside money platform outside the organized booster structure sanctioned by FCPS?

She is going to receive a 1099 for that money and have to pay taxes on it.

Where are those Overton lovers who kept claiming there were only 12 transfers? VHSL found a lot more.

This story did just disappear! I'm curious too.

I can’t believe that as some people hear the actual truth laid out by VHSL in their ‘recommendation’ for probation that they continue to justify the actions of Hayfield. 24 student-athletes transferred SOLELY for athletics and to be coached by specifically by one coach. Combining those recruits with some really good players on a Hayfield team that won the district just last year and saying 1.) we did nothing wrong, and then when shown they have broken the recruiting rules they say 2.) but everyone does it.

As a Hayfield parent has said all over Twitter, “What happened this year we an anomaly, a confluence of events that will likely never be seen again…”

Yes, the anomaly is the audacity of a school to think they could allow 24 transfers for solely athletic reasons in one season. And hopefully this VHSL punishment will ensure this never happens again in Virginia HS sports.

That parent was deeply involved with hiring Overton in the first place just fyi.
