Early morning practice - how many hours of sleep

Anonymous
If you have a swimmer or figure skater who practices early in the morning, how many hours of sleep do they get per night? I have an 11 yo that is just starting early morning practice. In bed by 8:30 but didn't fall asleep until 9:30, then woke up at 5:30 and practiced hard for an hour and then fell asleep on the way from school to practice and looked really tired walking into school.

We are signed up for two mornings a week, so that would mean two nights of 8 hours of sleep if the current sleep schedule holds. DC is training about ~10 hours a week right now across two sports, but one of them is just rec level for fun. The best coaching for main sport is only available to DC in the mornings.

Find a different program or coach. 11 is way too early for morning practices.

I’m assuming this is swim. I don’t think it’s that uncommon with really talented swimmers to do this at this age. My kids play team sports so I’m not an expert in this but do know 11 year olds who have 5:30 practice and 13 year olds that have 4:00 am practice.

I was a figure skater and we started early morning practice much younger than 11 due to limited ice time. I was on a consistent schedule all week long, typically in bed by 7:30 pm. My parents were early risers by nature so it didn't seem to upset our family dynamic too much. In high school I scheduled my easiest class first thing in the morning and sometimes napped through it.

That doesn't mean it's right. There are so many studies showing how lack of sleep in adolescence and adulthood is detrimental. Google it.

Just curious what is your end goal?

OP here. Our end goal is for our child to reach their potential in their sport, but I posted because I am wondering if we can make this new training schedule work and still have a healthy sleep schedule.

Your child can reach their potential without losing so much sleep.

Figure out how to do that.

My son is 14 and has been attending morning practices for a couple years. He's in bed at 9 and up at 4:30. So 7.5 hours of sleep. He loves his sport and wakes up quickly to make it to practice. He prefers this schedule over his friends who have after school sports and are trying to do balance schoolwork and late practices.
I will say when he was 12 and the mornings where just 2 or 3 practices, it was harder because the schedule shifts daily and your body can't adjust. That went for me too, the chauffeur. I prefer to wake up and go to sleep the same time(ish) each day.

I think it is a lot more difficult when it is only 1-2 days a week because you don't get into a routine of naturally going to bed earlier.

My son will be swimming at 4:30 am in a few weeks. We are hoping he will get at least 9 hours of sleep. In bed by 7pm and up at 4:15am.

I am sure I will also be in bed by 8

I wouldn’t do it. I train my 8 year old in their sport for 1 hour before school but we start at 7 am
