Kicked out of summer camp-last day

Anonymous
My child was in a summer camp for most of the summer. He has dealt with severe constipation from months ago that had impacted potty training. He got in with a specialist and we did a colon cleanse essentially over the weekend to clear the blockage and he’s on miralax now once daily. He’s been having a daily loose poop that has hit 3 times at camp.

Tomorrow is his last day with these friends and I got a call a few minutes ago asking me to not bring him because he had 1 episode of diarrhea. I reminded them it was his last day of camp….her response, “I know”.

I am pissed. Wtf? He hasn’t done anything to deserve missing out on his last day! He didn’t deserve to be kicked out like that. He was just telling me about his little buddies and doesn’t get to say goodbye.

This is childcare in my area. Total crap. You get either super conservative, religious preschools that hold to very outdated methods or more nature-based programs that are run often by people that are elitist and view childcare as just something on the side, for the fun and that parents are available at any hour to drop anything and pick up their kid, no matter the reason.

Did you explain that he is on Miralax and doesn't have a bug?

Yes, did you explain that he’s not sick?

In fairness, childcare providers usually have a policy for diarrhea.

Oh yes, they are well aware. My husband dropped him off late last week because
Of the big appointment and he briefly reviewed the plan (for the colon cleanse this weekend). I get it if it’s a long term thing but it’s literally the last week, the last day.

That’s too much to expect from camp, sorry.

I don't think they are kicking him out because of accidents or because they think he's done anything wrong. It sounds like it's an illness policy and it's bad luck it happens to be on the last day of camp.

You need to push back, OP.

Yeah, its too much to expect a daycare, even.

Agree it sounds like an illness policy. Same thing would have happened if he threw up. Maybe they would reconsider if you had a doctor's note, but it's one day so not really worth it. If it's about the friends schedule some play dates.

+1 After a bout of diarrhea, they require a child to be diarrhea free for 24 hours before they can return. It’s a standard policy. Your ds wasn’t “kicked out.” They aren’t obligated to handle diarrhea.

It really sucks. I’m sorry your ds has had such bad constipation. I’m sorry he doesn’t get to enjoy the last day of camp. I’m sorry you don’t have childcare for tomorrow.

If he's really devastated...Bring bubbles and chalk, show up outside at afternoon pickup with him and say bye to friends as they get picked up.

Otherwise, it's no big deal.

Miralax should not be causing diarrhea. I don’t blame the camp b

You clearly have never had a kid with a blockage and the after effects. I’ll spare you the details but it absolutely can.

Why not wait until after camp to do miralax, you see him up for failure.
