Lost 50lb a year ago. Just got back from a decadent vacation with my husband, plus my period is due any day, and I’m up a ridiculous 10lb! I feel so horrible, I can’t even explain it. I feel as bloated as I felt the day I was my heaviest and decided enough was enough, yet I’m 40lb lighter than that day! Do we just get used to a new normal? Anyone else ever experience this? |
The 10 pounds is likely water retention.
Try to get back to exercising and portion control - eat lightly today. Hydrate. Do you have your own detox routine? Mine is intermittent fasting, lots of ginger tea, lemon water and my version of a gluten free BRAT diet. I begi the day with a smoothie. This too shall pass. |
PP and I believe I am hypersensitive to weight gain. I experience a deep awkwardness or awareness that I am bloated or retaining water or up a few pounds. I rarely weigh myself but when I get this uncomfortable feeling, the scale can confirm (and make me feel worse).
The key is not to wallow in self pity. Just return to healthy habits immediately. No crash diets or over-exercising. Give yourself grace. |
I don’t, but I’m all ears to hear yours! What are your fasting hours? BRAT as in the diet you do for a stomach bug? (My plan was to hydrate and go protein-heavy, but now I’m intrigued) |
Yes, you mentally adjust to wherever you are, especially if it’s gradual. That’s why so many people don’t notice gaining an extra couple of pounds of year until they wake up and realize they are far heavier than they want to be. Frog in boiling water and all that. You are probably hyper aware due to your weight loss experience and because the gain/bloat happened so quickly; I’m sure the “weight” or water retention will pass once you are back to your routine. Congrats on your weight loss. |
Yes! My clothes fit the same, just a bit snugger, but suddenly feel like a whale. It’s the weirdest thing. |
How long was vacation? 10 lbs is a lot for a woman to be “just” water weight. It is probably 5 lbs of actual weight gain plus 5 lbs of water/poop retention. I know when I travel I stop pooping for sometimes a week. I’m not uncomfortable and I go back to regular once home- just a weird phenomenon |
We are all so different. I always lose weight on vacation. All that extra time to exercise: walk, swim, etc. If I go NYC or Paris I walk 10+ miles a day. At home I barely do 5 miles. At a resort? You can't pull me away from laps or aqua exercise classes, Y'know, the stuff you don't have time for during daily life. |
I'm normally ~116lbs. If I eat tons of salt before my period I can gain 10 lbs of water and feel like crap. Flush it out with tons of water, a low sodium diet, and go easy of the carbs a sugar for a day or two (my body treats those like salt). It will come off in 3-4 days. Oh, and get lots of sleep. It makes it easier for your body to normalize. |
Same. I wish I could walk everywhere like when I’m on vacation instead of being chained to a desk. |
10 pounds is a lot to gain in a week. I would cut out booze and sugar. |
I figure the weight I lose on vacation -- and business travel -- is due to the anxiety of schedule and travel changes |
My fasting hours (and BTW, I only do this when I want to detox/resume healthy habits/self-care) are 14 hours give or take. No eating late at night. Yesterday, in lieu of breakfast, I had two cups of coffee with oat milk and then lunch at 1:30 pm. Yes, the BRAT diet is something I follow when I want to eat lightly and/or have a big event/travel/anything that could give me anticipatory anxiety. Gentle, light foods - nothing spicy or heavily fibrous. |
