Best neighborhoods in DC/MD?

Anonymous
We will move out of VA if it becomes…inhospitable to our family. Without getting into the reasons why, where should we start looking in DC/MD? We might consider a bigger move up to Northeast but want to explore local options first.

Walkable
Lots of bike trails & parks
Inside the beltway
Kid in middle school has IEP (other kid is at private)

~$2.5m budget

Anywhere you buy a $2.5m house will be fine.

With that budget, I'd be looking at Chevy Chase, perhaps Somerset, which close to lots of bike trails and filled with parks and an easy bike or ok walk to Friendship Heights or Bethesda.

Where is private school kid in school? Will kid 2 go there, too? If you have many years at that school coming up, I'd think about the commute to that school as a top priority for lifestyle sanity.

On DC vs. MD, DC will of course be completely politically compatible but its legislation is always contingent.

On support for a kid with an IEP, seems like there was a big discussion of DC vs. MoCo just recently and maybe someone else can dig out that thread and post a link.

How do you define walkable?

Keep in mind that your budget will need to be adjusted for the higher tax burden you're likely to face. That may or may not be material to you, but may merit some research before relocation.

Town of Somerset off Wisconsin Ave in Chevy Chase.
Very family friendly, walkable to metro, friendship heights, Bethesda, zoned to BCC-great HS.

Almost all of DC/MD WOTP works. And EOTP there’s a lot both quite close to the park and a few miles east that will work.

This is actually about your specific priorities, OP.

Town of Somerset or Chevy Chase West (the area of Chevy Chase adjacent to Norwood Park and closer to the Bethesda Metro)

You basically have unlimited money. Literally anywhere is going to be fine on that budget.

Trying to understand why an entire state would become inhospitable. Do you work at provide women's services that are becoming illegal? If so, anywhere in DC would welcome you with open arms. Personally, I like Kalorama, Mt Pleasant, Glover Park, Cleveland Park. All have simple Rock Creek access, highly walkable, etc.
