APS is pretty keeping tight-lipped about what next year will look like. I expect this thread to explode on Aug 11 shortly after the town hall.

The communication to elementary staff, as recently as summer school was "regular school year, with masks"

It's literally not that complicated so I'm not sure what people are waiting for. It's going to be 5-days with masks, and they'll have some rules about what exposure/quarantine looks like. It's the same in every single district locally. End of story.

It wasn't more complicated than that last year either--and look how things unfolded. The irony is that Delta has nearly put us exactly back where we were last year--with the exception of reducing mortality and severe illness for vaccinated individuals. But, vaccinated individuals can still get COVID and we all know elementary is totally unvaxxed. So, we have not moved the needle all that far for elementary kids from where we were last year, and yet we lost a whole year basically for them. It's hard not to fear the same repeated insanity this year. I think a lot of families have a degree of PTSD from the past year and are growing increasingly anxious.

Great thing is --> COVID is less harmful than the flu to healthy ES kids. Riding in a car is more dangerous. Nothing has changed with delta. There are 2 statewide virtual academies for you if you don't like risk calibers that are similar to everyday life.

Kids can't wait to be back in school, where the science says it's the healthiest for them (not just with COVID, but with all other aspects of health too).

If you refuse to mask or vaxx, you are welcome to stay home too so that the rest of us who did everything right can go back to normal.

Require vaccines for everyone >12 in person.

If not vaccinated, students >12 have to do virtual. Teachers lose their in-person role and possibly job if there aren't enough virtual slots to fill.

I have elementary school kids that I want on school as well, but I am not reading the same about the variant. It is concerning. I’m hoping we won’t need to go hybrid again, but if things get bad, I think we have to.

+1 especially after reading about the 17 year old here in Virginia that just died. Her mom thought it was just a bad cold.

Someone in Health & Medicine has a good description of why Covid is different from the flu and the common cold. It is because of "cytokine storm," which is deadly. Basically the immune system jumps in with such a strong response to the virus that the immune system itself kills the person.

Very, very scary. Between the virus and now this cytokine storm, I don't know what to think. However, it is what I worry about for kids who are not vaccinated. I've given up worrying about adults who refuse to vaccinate. Now I only care about kids who are not able to be vaccinated yet.

Cytokines storms are not novel to COVID. Flu can cause it too. If an otherwise healthy person does from a viral infection this is often the culprit. Don’t exoticize medical terminology just because you read it in an article. The jury is still out on whether delta actually is worse for kids. Even if it is, the difference is small and the danger to children (I.e, as compared to other diseases like RSV or flu) is largely unchanged.

We will go back to school five days a week. Depending on how everyone behaves will depend on whether hybrid even comes into play.

Just get your jab and wear a damn mask inside, and school will remain open.

Honestly, the people advocating to close schools 3rd year in a row are just subhuman. They don’t have an ounce of empathy for our children and what they have gone through last year. They know schools were open all over the country successfully in the peak of Covid and no one died yet they are just trying to ruin the lives of families and children in our area again . I think schools should be open. I also think that now that I am at risk my child should stay home for now. Duran seems to have forgotten life continues outside of his bubble.
