A Gallup poll conducted from June 23 to July 6 surveying more than 36,000 U.S. adults found that 61 percent of Black Americans said they'd like police to spend the same amount of time in their community, while 20 percent answered they'd like to see more police, totaling 81 percent. Just 19 percent of those polled said they wanted police to spend less time in their area.

I know, I know “defund the police” is a moronic catchphrase because although a tiny percentage of the people who say it truly mean “let’s get rid of the police altogether!” what most people is “let’s reconfigure the police forces so that they serve everyone to the best of their ability. Let’s get rid of the militarized police. Let’s have a larger mental health and social work presence, because a lot of the things for which the police are called would be better served by having a social worker or someone who works in mental health or drug addiction. Let’s make sure that Black people feel confident that if they call the police that they’ll get the same treatment a White who calls the police would get.” Etc. It’s more like “let’s reimagine the police.”

Now you can stop being angry about the phrase and focus on the fact that right wing media has whipped a lot of unhinged right wingers into a hateful froth against AOC and she gets more threats of violence and sexual violence and sadism against her, so she has to fork over for private security because that’s not a service that the police provide.
