Has Duran gone mad? (APS)

I've been saying all along - teachers **should** be considered essential workers. They should be a priority to receive the vaccine. If they refuse, then they can either go back to the classroom without it or quit. I can't understand why teachers are not essential. Personally, I think this is one of the biggest underlying issues with this whole situation.

Why prioritize us and give us the vaccine when they can just not do that and still demand we go back in. I don’t think anybody wants to actually treat us like essential workers they just expect us to act like ones anyway.

This exchange is the heart of the matter. Teachers aren't respected as BOTH highly educated professionals whose lives matter AND who are essential to society. Just read any thread here on DCUM.

DCUM posters are the softest people in the world.

who says we aren't recognizing and respecting teachers? Simply put, they should be considered essential.

Again. We are not though. People think we are essential but we don’t get treated as essential employees. We are expecting to just behave as they do without the recognition. Sorry, the cynic in me knows how this works. They’ll say “teachers are essential!” And then not prioritize us for the vaccine. Open schools but not make sure we all get a vaccine first. Call us essential yet never show it in action. Just watch. I have no faith in leadership anymore.

Relax OP. Duran is not going to open the schools in January. This is just the same playbook he has been using for the past six months. He keeps one side happy by closing the schools. He keeps the other from totally rebelling by promising that reopening is just around the corner. In January the number of deaths is going to peak at around 4,000/day and he is going to say it's not safe, we need to hold off a while longer. Eventually, what will happen is the teachers will be prioritized for the vaccine and every one of them who wants a vaccine will get one by sometime in April or May. He'll reopen the schools on a hybrid basis (or maybe even full-time basis) sometime in May, declare victory, and go home.

From your mouth to God’s ears. I hope you’re right. I am doubtful.

This is so true sadly. Just remember it's not all parents by a stretch. There's a relatively small number of parents demanding in person now and treating teachers like their servants. They sure are loud though!

I don’t want to open and shut like other districts, and I have a right to a safe hybrid reopening, too.

OMG this +1000.

Do you know me?

It doesn't matter, though, if only teachers are prioritized. If our family members aren't then the whole point is moot. We could be exposed to the virus by an asymptomatic carrier kid and then bring the virus home and transfer it to our elderly parents or our vulnerable family members. I'm not willing to do that. When everyone is vaccinated, including kids, then it will be safe. Until then it doesn't matter to me if I'm vaccinated because the people I love aren't. And I won't risk their lives because of a stupid job.

I will believe it ONLY when they tell me my date to get vaccinated and I actually get that shot. Until then it’s talk.
