Has Duran gone mad? (APS)

Today's email sounds like he is planning to actually move forward with opening schools to Levels 2 and 3 in January:

"I am continuing to work with administrators and staff to monitor the health metrics and operating conditions, and to finalize timing for Level 2 and Level 3 transitions to hybrid/in-person learning for families and students who have selected that instructional model.

Specific details and dates for future in-person learning transitions for students in Level 2 and Level 3 will be communicated to staff and families in early January. We continue to evaluate all metrics, and to focus on effective mitigation strategies to ensure the health and safety of staff and students."

Umm, what is he thinking? Has he seen the metrics? Has he read the news? Even Europe can't keep its schools open and they at least tried to shut down other things.

But he makes it sound like - we have mitigation so we're all good!

Not in regards to elementary school. There is good data that elementary schools aren’t an area of spread.

Ok, I disagree with your interpretation of the data, and clearly you are one of the fervent Open Upper true believers.

But putting that aside, are you aware that Level 3 is secondary???
Anonymous
Yes, he addressed this at a meeting earlier this month. APS is moving forward, focusing on mitigation more than metrics.

It says they’ll update in January, not that we’ll be back then. I’m guessing they kick it down the road another month after that.

There is nothing in this that says kids definitely going back in January.

Message says:
Specific details and dates for future in-person learning transitions for students in Level 2 and Level 3 will be communicated to staff and families in early January.

That means the dates will be COMMUNICATED in early January, not that they'll start GOING in early January.

This is actually pretty masterful language that threads the needle. People that want to open can read it and feel like they are serious about planning for return. People that are anxious about return can see the repeated reference to metrics.

Funding is getting cut so it's time to open

Great! It's past time we get back. The focus should be on mitigation, not blind adherence to metrics.

I hope I can still opt out and keep my kid safe at home. Online is fine for us.

Well there's blind adherance to metrics and then there's opening up in RED with cases flaring. I doubt too many of us are going to be comfortable with that. I know I'm not.

We can loan you some of our FCPS safety teams to inspect your COVID prevention measures. You can trust them because they have zero public health experience.

They have stated many times that DL will be an option for the remainder of the year
