Anonymous wrote: I've been saying all along - teachers **should** be considered essential workers. They should be a priority to receive the vaccine. If they refuse, then they can either go back to the classroom without it or quit. I can't understand why teachers are not essential. Personally, I think this is one of the biggest underlying issues with this whole situation. Why prioritize us and give us the vaccine when they can just not do that and still demand we go back in. I don’t think anybody wants to actually treat us like essential workers they just expect us to act like ones anyway.

This exchange is the heart of the matter. Teachers aren't respected as BOTH highly educated professionals whose lives matter AND who are essential to society. Just read any thread here on DCUM.
who says we aren't recognizing and respecting teachers? Simply put, they should be considered essential.
Again. We are not though. People think we are essential but we don’t get treated as essential employees. We are expecting to just behave as they do without the recognition. Sorry, the cynic in me knows how this works. They’ll say “teachers are essential!” And then not prioritize us for the vaccine. Open schools but not make sure we all get a vaccine first. Call us essential yet never show it in action. Just watch. I have no faith in leadership anymore.
Teachers are prioritized for the vaccine in Virginia. What are you talking about?
It doesn't matter, though, if only teachers are prioritized. If our family members aren't then the whole point is moot. We could be exposed to the virus by an asymptomatic carrier kid and then bring the virus home and transfer it to our elderly parents or our vulnerable family members. I'm not willing to do that. When everyone is vaccinated, including kids, then it will be safe. Until then it doesn't matter to me if I'm vaccinated because the people I love aren't. And I won't risk their lives because of a stupid job.
Moving the goalposts, tsk tsk You can't even hear yourself.
