NYC parents vs DC parents

I literally have not heard a single poster here say "I need my kids out of the house." I've heard many posters claiming that is the motivation of parents who want school to open. But posters have all almost uniformly focused on their kids social and educational needs that are not (cannot be) served in DL. "I need my kids out of the house" is a toxic WTU caricature to deflect blame.

Look back at other threads. The reasons to send kids back as the infection rates soar, people traveling to hot zones for thanksgiving and during flu season have been shifting:
1. I need my kids out of the house
2. Think of how this is hurting poor brown kids I have never known or seen
3. Think of the moms who can't afford a nanny
4. My sped kid can't learn on DL
5. My kid isn't learning from DL
6. If private schools are open why can't we

It changes - they keep shifting the argument to see which one will stick to get them sympathy.

No, it hasn't been changing. It's been the same arguments all along. And as time goes by, parents are seeing how badly DL is failing, so there has been an uptick in posts about that. There may be one or two posters who say they "need their kids out of the house" but I don't recall seeing that anywhere.

(And by the way - your list are all GOOD arguments. As opposed to the weirdo who keeps insisting that only bad parents ever had the expectation of sending their kids to school.)

+1. These arguments are in line with the arguments made by European experts and decision-makers for why schools should be open even during a pandemic. They are not spurious or without merit as some here would like to insinuate.

I know. It would be hilarious if it wasn't so sad that PP listed them believing it was some kind of critique ...

Meanwhile, arguments from teachers have been remarkably consistent:

1. When rates went up:
“I don’t wanna DIE!!! You must hate your kids!“

2. When rates went down to almost zero:
“I don’t wanna DIE!!! You must hate your kids!“

3. When private schools reopened:
“I don’t wanna DIE!!! You must hate your kids!“

4. When asked to be part of the solution and find reasonable ways of reopening:
“I don’t wanna DIE! You must hate your kids!”

5. When presented with science that DL is hurting kids and schools aren’t actually superspreaders:
“I don’t wanna DIE!!! You must hate your kids!“

6. Next year, when offered to get vaccinated:
“I don’t wanna DIE!!! You must hate their kids!”

7. In 2027, after everyone else on the planet has been vaccinated:
“I don’t wanna DIE!!! You must hate their kids!”

This thread is about NYC schools, where very few black and brown kids opted in to “in person” schooling. So, maybe don’t? All the crazed lunatics advocating for schools to open amidst a surge (in a city with 24,000 COVID deaths) are white. Take a look a the videos of people protesting last week. Do you see black and brown families there, screaming about wanting to see the manager of the coronavirus? No.

Well, NYC will now open elementary schools and phase out hybrid learning.

wow yeah, that's right. all the parents who think it's terrible that you can only be educated if you have the money for private schools are Karens.

BTW lots of prominent black advocates for public education think schools should reopen. check out Nikole Hannah Jones' twitter feeds.

How do you know its failing a huge proportion of kids?

Everyone knows that.

No, we don't. Some of our kids are doing really well with it. Maybe OP is the problem, not DL.

That's great if your kid is doing well. Mine is not. Neither are any of my friend's kids. Kids were not meant to learn in this manner. ESPECIALLY FOR KINDERGARTEN.

First off, its K. That means you need to work with them regardless of DL and school - reading, handwriting and basic math. Second, you need to be heavily involved with DL. You are the parent, take responsibility. And, stop having kids.

Stop having kids? As one of the millions of women who have had to quit my job as I can't afford a nanny to take over DL while I work please F off. Women Are Exiting the Labor Force En Masse due to DL and people like you legitimize this.

You piss off and grow up. How did you pay for child care 0-5? You both are working and cannot afford child care and yet you did before? I quit my job when we realized my child had special needs. It sucked but paying a nanny would have cost more than I was earning. We get it. Your kids are trophies so you just want to show them off but not take care of them. Your husband could have quit instead of you. The kids probably would have been better off.

You're gross. Why don't you go back to actually helping our kids learn instead of shaming parents for your own shortcomings. Just shameless.

I am not a teacher nor responsible for your kids but since I successfully taught. One the basics they can come stay here for a while till you decide to be a parent. No one owes you anything. You choose to have kids and you need to parent them. If you cannot, which you are clear about, then someone else needs to step in.

Oh you’re annoying boomer aunt Karen. Your comments make so much more sense now. Sorry your one kid is not spending the holidays with you because you’re awful, and Facebook shut down all your Qanon groups, so you have nothing better to do than make constant obnoxious posts on school forums for an area you don’t even live in. Maybe try putting the phone down and going for a walk?

Nailed it.

It sucks for everyone. Why do you think you would be spared?

Because I don't accept that people who have money for private or are in Catholic schools (or in publics in other states) are somehow more resistant to the virus.

Catholic schools have required faculty and staff to sign liability waivers. Private school families that are not adhering to guidelines are being kicked out (see the Kushners) but generally speaking private school families have higher levels of education and social trust and less exposure due to their jobs.

Not comparable to DCPS.

Public schools EVERYWHERE are open - in the US and internationally. You're copping out. DCPS serves kids who need to be in school the most; therefore, they should be making the biggest effort. The real reason we're not in school is the teacher's union refusing to do it, not any of the things you listed.

DCPS is open. It’s open via DL. You just don’t like it.

I don't "like" it because it's failing a huge proportion of kids. It's not "open" by any meaningful standard.

That's your OPINION. Don't speak for the many of us whose kids are succeeding in DL (through their own effort, combined with our parental effort).

This is not a subjective opinion. There is a broad consensus among experts that long-term DL is harmful.

"the pandemic, which has forced millions of children in the United States out of schools and is widely perceived to have done significant damage to their education and mental health."

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/11/29/nyregion/schools-reopening-partially.html

Now NYC is reopening at least elementary schools.

There are definitely kids who are doing better in DL. They tend to be kids who had significant anxiety issues around in-person school before. I think one lesson that should be learned from this pandemic is that there is a group of kids for whom the stress of in-person learning impedes their access to education.

However, this group shouldn't be driving education policy for the population as a whole.

Of course. That's why there has always been the option to homeschool. Some parents may be finding out now that homeschooling would be best for their kids. What's problematic is if they think their experience is representative of a significant share of the school population and advocate or insult others based on that faulty assumption.

DC parents are insufferable...we too moved from NY to DC and while at a private, place no value in in-person education. They will not listen to facts that highlight the safety of school and the negative effects of virtual learning. We are a liberal family but the failure of the left to think critically, to have the ability to listen to science that disproves their narrative, and outright nastiness to those who disagree with them is astounding, disappointing, and honestly makes them more like those on the right who they despise than they would like to believe.
