Oh ffs. We get it, you want childcare to be exclusively done by moms and low-paid non union workers at daycares. |
I live in NYC and I don't think it was parents that got NYC schools. Because NYC was the epicenter of the pandemic back in March/April, I think it was a point of pride for Cuomo/De Blasio to say that NYC schools were open this fall. It was all to say "NYC is back!"
But NYC had the same struggles with teachers' unions that DC had. There were tough negotations. De Blasio backed himself into a corner with the 3% number and the teachers' unions made that a deal-breaker in their negotiations. So schools had to close at 3%, even though we saw through the fall that more targeted closures of "hot spots" in the city worked better. Taking an average across the city doesn't make sense -- some areas of Staten Island are like at 8% while some areas in Manhattan are around 1%. But we all had to close when the city on average hit that 3% number. |
It is a vocal minority that wants schools in person. NYC proved that. They managed to hold in person instruction for maybe a month and a half, and even then were never more than 10 or 20 percent enrolled. A majority of parents are fine with schools closed and their kids attending virtually, and you don't hear much from them because they already have what they want. And now with a vaccine coming, it will stay this way until the summer. |
Here you go - https://twitter.com/AnnaLysaGayle/status/1332447764198920192?s=20 BTW she's a reporter but you can call her a WTU shill. But she sites DC gov information. |

^^This DL sucks; having my kid home sucks. But for now its the best option - I look forward to the day when I look back on this and "cherish" the time we spent together. BTW right now he's zoned out in front of the TV; I'm working (DCUM) break so I can get some work in before the DL interruptions. SUCKS big time - but I can't go hang out with a friend at her house; I can't drive and drop him off at Grandmas; can't go mall shopping or see a movie so for now I work on a nice Saturday afternoon and clean out a closet and "try" to play with my kid (maybe do a reading or math game). I talk to all my mom friends and no one is screaming to get back. They are struggling too but dealing with the healthcare system now with a sick kid would be worse esp for the ones with multiples and small housing spaces. |
you’re in a bubble. my mom friends want their kids to return to school or already have them in public and private schools in DC and elsewhere. |
I actually think this is true. The way the union has gotten away with this, I think public school as we knew it is over. Something different will take its place. But I don't think schools will ever open in the same model they once operated. Teacher unions will milk and exploit forever. And the parents let them get away with it. Nay, enabled it. |
No I live in the middle of the city and have friends who live in all wards. Some on public assistance and some in million dollar homes. I don't live in a bubble of cleveland park or the palisades. |
Sorry all of my friends do want their kids to return to school - but when its safe. not when rates are going up; half the city has clearly left to get infected "back home" and flu season is among up. some of the mom parents include an epidemiologist and biologist who are reading the scientific information. one is a shift working mom with 5 kids in a 2 bedroom apartment. she doesn't want to go back until its safe. and it sucks for her more than all of us even with her husband doing half the load. |
Education is NOT childcare. You are the reason teachers hate teaching. its not the kids its parents like you who think you are their servants. |
And I will add you pay probably less than $1000 a year out of your taxes for public school - you are getting a deal by A LOT. so quit the argument that you are paying their salaries - you are paying for a week of their salary. why don't you move to florida where everything is open - they seem to have the best life down there. |
NY Times had a really good article a few days ago about the school situation in NYC. I’m to lazy to search and post link. It did not go well. Everyone is mad at the mayor now - parents, teachers, principals, union, community members. Apparently trust between the mayor and teachers is the lowest it has ever been |
Do you really not understand that this means there are 3-6 positive staff cases and 12 others quarantining as a result? Also, the fact that there are 0-1 kid cases suggests that the children were not the source and the in classroom safeguards are sufficient. We have no way of knowing if there may have been in school transmission in the other cases, but it’s more likely that this is in line with rising city rates. |
They also did a podcast that was really good about it. NYC is in a unique position because they got the worst of it and could reopen fast but yeah insanity. |
