+1. I want to know what I can do to show police support.

Same. This is out of control. What can we do to support the police?

A bit of a generalization but many in enforcement think that Trump and republicans have their backs, whereas Dems want to take away their guns (there was some faux news circling around during the 2016 campaign that Clinton wanted to do exactly that, and I know real LEOs that believed it). So get rid of the Dem mayors and governors I guess??

Show up. Join the marchers. Be peaceful. Put your body between the police and people of color. Speak up when people make racists comments. Don't just be passive. Write letters to your representatives that you want reforms to ensure the safety and well being of ALL citizens during police interactions. Support affirmative action.

The simple fact that so many white people can retreat to their personal bubbles in suburbs near and far, pull into a three car garage, lock the door and forget about it, without consequence, is just unacceptable. I blame capitalism for the horrid attitudes of so many, including those in the DMV suburbs.

Guessing you're a troll.

But in case you're not, there are things. Like listen. Like check in with your friends of color. Like reading up on how to talk about it. Like attending protests to show support--some of the FB instructions say to be quiet and listen, but to go up front if there's a confrontation because you're in less danger.

And ask for the manager if you think there’s a problem.

Once again, Asian businesses are bearing the brunt of sociopathic looters taking advantage of police misconduct. They were already struggling due to COVID-19, and their situation is far worse now. If you believe we have an obligation to give space to looters and rioters, then you have an obligation to help the businesses they destroy recover.

It is hard to know what to do when you’re white but don’t like what American culture does to black people. On one hand, you have some black people saying, “Just shut up. It’s not about you and your ego.” And I understand that and feel it, so I don’t talk about it much because I feel like—what do I really have to say? This isn’t my experience.

But then if you don’t say anything or talk about it—and I think most white liberals are really afraid to honestly talk about race because they’re afraid of saying the wrong thing—aren’t you just enabling things to stay as they are? Aren’t you just complicity accepting things?

For the people saying, “Call people out when they say racist things.” A lot of white liberals don’t hear things like that. I rarely do. Regardless of what people feel in their hearts, most of the people I know consider saying racist things unacceptable. It’s tacky and uneducated.” That doesn’t mean they don’t sometimes display racist behaviors that are almost subconscious...and also...some of the things are blended in together with class issues. It can be hard to differentiate between racism and classism. Not that either are good or that, in America, they aren’t connected.

Some of my best friends are black. Yeah. I said it. I know how it sounds. It’s true. But they are also wealthy and highly educated. They “act white.” And I don’t think I even have to explain what that means, even though I know how it sounds. They aren’t African-Americans. They are Caribbean. They don’t identify with African-American culture. But they have still faced racism. But they are also still privileged. I guess I point that out because I think a lot of white liberals think of black racism as affecting poor black people. It affects all black people to some degree, but it affects poor people more, like everything bad affects poor people more. They don’t have the resources to protect themselves from it as much.

Most of the racism I see is systemic, not things that I think any one person has much control over but that hopefully can change by electing fair leaders who want to make things better for everyone.

American blacks can be very racist towards black immigrants. I saw a lot if that growing up.

Luckily many white people are perfectly willing to do just that. White protestors have been lining up in front of cops to shield black protestors. There are lots of images and video circulating. Here’s one example and I post it because I am struck by how young these kids are. They are babies! And they have more courage than you.

I will also point out that in that video, the two kids are lucky to get some black cops who act like adults should act in these situations.

Why do people like you keep things that Democrats want to take away your guns? Why is strong legislation against military weapons in the hands of someone mentally ill such a rallying cry for 'they want to take away my gun?'

And just so you know, Democrats own guns too (big ones) just like conservatives and also dig granola.

Anonymous wrote:I know this has been asked a dozen times before, but I still don’t understand the answer. What am I, as a suburban white person with no power or influence to do? If I saw something I would certainly speak up. Posting on social media seems empty and hollow. Protesting doesn’t seem useful. I vote for Democrats.

Everyone keeps saying unaffected people need to do something. What?

vote to help low skilled workers get a living wage. number one policy change should be to limit immigration. wages have been flat for over 30 years for low skilled workers.

Sorry, but I find the white girl savior thing to be kind of cringe inducing and patronizing.
