S/o - what should caring white people do?

I think most posters on here are beyond the age of typical law enforcement recruitment. My younger sister is one BTW and I’ve seen her become pretty hardened over the years. Hard to have a serious conversation with her about all this. It usually descends into her ranting about how police officers risk their lives every day and the media only focuses on the bad things, etc.

Maybe, if you would listen to what she is saying you could have a "serious" conversation.

Yes, there is police brutality. But, it is hard to focus on that when you are beating your brains out trying to help people at risk to yourself.

Minneapolis police has had problems for many years. They have a Dem mayor, a Dem governor, a Dem city council, and an African American Chief of Police. They have had police shootings of African Americans and an African American policeman shot and killed a white woman. The latter is in jail--but, it took over a year to charge him. There were no riots over her death.

What happened to Floyd was awful, horrific, disturbing beyond words. But, you need to look to the people running the show in Minnesota--not riot all over the US. And, especially, this is the fault of Chauvin and, likely, his posse.

Same. This is out of control. What can we do to support the police?

Vote for politicians that will hold them accountable so that one bad police officer doesn't make national news and makes the whole police force look bad.

The only way to support the police is to make sure that they know that they can no longer have qualified immunity for 17 counts. 3 strikes, you're out. The majority of the police force is good. But if you have a rotting bad apple, it means that other police officers will rot too.

So you need to vote to overhaul the system.

I'm wondering if the unions and the police force can be sued for failing to serve the people. I think businesses should have the right to sue because the police isn't serving or protecting: it's actually got rules that allow for murder. I'm not a lawyer, but I think it's feasible for businesses to sue the government for a failure to actually provide justice for all and domestic tranquility.

HAHAHA it's very true. Regardless, she sounds kind of bitter. Maybe she can get out of patrol. In a lot of major police departments, half of the jobs are outside patrol, though you usually have to do a good 5 years in patrol before you can apply.

Caring white people should support structural change which addresses racism, economic inequality, and housing inequality. The simple fact that so many white people can retreat to their personal bubbles in suburbs near and far, pull into a three car garage, lock the door and forget about it, without consequence, is just unacceptable. I blame capitalism for the horrid attitudes of so many, including those in the DMV suburbs.
