College and University Discussion
These days, Wouldn’t they just Uber ? It’s not like bc kids are poor |
| Where do Villanova kids go to eat out or get coffee? Anywhere in walking distance? Do kids have a place to park? Also wondering same thing for BC. I imagine both those schools more difficult to park than Wake? |
BC has a TON of parking - a multistory garage & several large lots. Easy to park (unlike, say, BU and NEU.) |
Pull up a google map of each campus with surrounding neighborhoods and search "coffee" |
| Based on our visit, I think Villanova has a very small strip within a 10 min walk. There wasn't much there, but I do remember a Starbucks. As mentioned, there's a converted gas station that's a coffee shop within a 10 min walk to Wake and Reynold Village is a 15 min walk. I would say kids need a car or Uber account at both locations. BC kids can walk 10 min to a Dunkin or 15 mins into Brighton for more options. |

I went to Tech. Everything we needed was on campus. It was a great time.
This obsession with walking to cafes? Wtf? I don’t think my son would care. I know many BC alums and they all loved it there. |
| Not everyone has a car and not everyone can afford uber so yes being able to walk is something to at least consider |
Most BC students do not have a car. Most students at BC take the campus shuttle bus if they're headed to Cleveland Circle (just a few min) and take the T if they're headed elsewhere. It is an urban lifestyle. There's Dunkins, ice cream, tacos, pizza, playa bowls, subway, another fancier sandwich shop, and a convenience store on Comm Ave on the corner of campus. There are cafes on campus. I was under the impression that there are areas with some restaurants walking distance from both Wake and Villanova. |

I went to Wake in the 90s and being walking distance to stuff wasn't really a concern. Cute, self contained campus. We had a cafeteria, a food court (pizza hut, taco bell, grill) and then a convenience store for food options. Social life was basically on campus with fraternity parties. There was one local club that people went to occasionally that was over by where the football stadium and Coliseum for basketball were - I saw several 90s bands there.
It worked for me. I went out more when I was home (close to a state university) to the main street bars/restaurants and we drove to a close city for clubs. |
BC is the most competitive. I think for Wake your kid would need to feel okay in a very southern and non-diverse school. It falls quite a bit below BC in competitiveness now. It just crashed in the latest US News & World Report rankings too - this year. On the other hand, Villanova seems be be on the rise. I would also worry that no one outside the south has ever heard of Wake. No name recognition and much harder to get a job from there in most cities especially NY. |

Wake had bigger name recognition when we had the #1 basketball player in the country in the 90s
They occasionally have a good football season now, but they are never going to be top team there |
