Ways to protect yourself without a gun

Many of these suggestions are well and good, but if there are at least two attackers working together, you've probably lost already -- while you're busy disabling one of them, the other one disables you. Real life isn't like the movies.

In other words, the only safety is to be found in numbers.

Once a guy is within six feet of you a gun is useless to you (cop here). That's why there's a great deal of time spent on defense training in police academy because you have to go hands on with people if they get that close to you. I took Krav and would recommend that if you want to learn how to defend yourself without a gun or pepper spray. Prior to the academy I had never been in a fight so it was good to get hit there before going through academy. Some of the techniques have helped in my job and it's a great workout too!

Why, do they have a chance to grab the gun away if they get 6 feet away from someone? Why can't you shoot them?

It comes down to a few factors - are they charging you? Is it safer to keep your gun holstered so it doesn't turn into a fight for your gun. Is your gun already holstered? If they're coming at you while you draw your weapon there is a good chance they will close in on you before you can get your gun out and a good shot. That's one reason why you should keep your distance away from an assailant (duh) but also keep in mind that you're not being backed into a corner. When I think back to some of the fights I've been in at work they have started in close quarters (think small living room) during an arrest attempt. No way would I have drawn my weapon only to have someone take it. That's not to say I haven't drawn my weapon (felony traffic stops, clearing a house after a burglary, etc.) I just prefer not to if I have someone a body-length away from me.

If you're talking about in home protection the best way is to deter. Outside lights and dogs have always been recommended by both law enforcement and criminals who've been reformed and are willing to say which houses they'd pass on.

It is useless for a woman to try to use martial arts on a man. He will destroy you. If you're a woman, it's a gun or nothing.

- Black belt and concealed carry holder

A "black belt" is meaningless when it comes to personal defense.

My husband travels a lot and wanted me to have a gun in case of break ins. We compromised with a professional level taser like police use. In my bedside table.

Ask Kevin.

That kid fought off two grown men multiple times using basic household items.

Yes. Church congregations and MAGA rallies are especially safe. Go for it!

For a woman trying to fight a man, yes.

For a man trying to fight a man, no.

Why do you feel like you need a gun? What do you feel it will accomplish? Do you actually, really believe that a gun can stop an assailant? Has anyone ever spoken with you about mental illness treatment?

You are the LAST person we should let have a gun.

I don’t need a gun, and I’d never touch one. I can reason and talk my way out of a confrontation. And if I couldn’t, I’d use my keys, some hairspray, or a bat. All are more effective than a gun. Even the police officers on this thread have said that guns are ineffective.

Someone who breaks into your house is not going to be "reasoned and talked" out of robbing and raping you. Your keys, hairspray, and bat aren't going to stop them. None of those are more effective than bullets to the center of mass. Those supposed police officers are wrong.

This is why you need multiple able bodied people and multiple weapons.

Woe unto the single parents with very young children, they are screwed.
