Ways to protect yourself without a gun

Stun gun?

I own one that doubles as a flashlight

A cast iron skillet.
A machete.
A metal cane.

DD just said she does not miss the grade 7 hallway stinking like axe all the time.
Now according to this Axe truly will be the death of us lol.

I have baseball bats and a high power flashlight.
I have occasionally slept with my car keys and garage door opener by my bed so I could open the door and set off my car alarm.
I do kind of wish I had a gun right now.

You laugh now like many laughed and rolled their eyes about people prepping for COVID weeks before it got to the U.S.

We've got thousands of people in this area who have been laid off and who are only getting $175/week. I know the apartment building I live in has lots of food service workers who are now all out of work. I was talking with one when we were both walking our dogs and he said he's getting $175/week for unemployment. The minimum rent in our apartment complex is $1400 for a one bedroom and goes up to $2300. You think someone who works in a food service job is going to have a huge savings to rely on?

People are going to start getting desperate and it's going to be ugly.

Once a guy is within six feet of you a gun is useless to you (cop here). That's why there's a great deal of time spent on defense training in police academy because you have to go hands on with people if they get that close to you. I took Krav and would recommend that if you want to learn how to defend yourself without a gun or pepper spray. Prior to the academy I had never been in a fight so it was good to get hit there before going through academy. Some of the techniques have helped in my job and it's a great workout too!

It is useless for a woman to try to use martial arts on a man. He will destroy you. If you're a woman, it's a gun or nothing.

- Black belt and concealed carry holder

Well then you're doing it wrong. It's not about brute strength or about beating up an assailant. It's about self-defense.

- Black belt without a gun

You cannot protect yourself from criminals with a gun. Period. Stop falling for the gun lobby BS. You already have much more effective improvised weapons at your disposal. Use them. A baseball bat or flashlight is far more effective.

Yikes!

We have a cricket bat. Flat sided so even easier to use.

And far more deadly than some stupid gun. Good on you!

First off: you subject yourself to significant and civil penalties if you injure someone; so-called “self defense” is only in the movies. You all do realize knives and bats are deadly weapons in the eye of the law, right?

Second, if someone threatening comes up to you, why not just call 911 and let the police handle it? This isn’t the Wild West, and we prosecute vigilantes who take the law into their own hands.

Virginia's self defense laws provide that a non-aggressor is justified in using force against another person if (1) he reasonably believes (2) that the force is necessary (3) to protect himself from imminent use of unlawful force by the other person.

Cans of pepper spray and several Maglites. One lives in my car.

I'm guessing something like a can of hairspray and a lighter would also be highly effective in combination.

Even your own hands are more effective at stopping an attack than a gun. Don’t fall for the macho patriarchal propaganda.

If you are a woman, this is dangerously stupid and wrong. Sorry.

Oh really? And why’s that, Mr Tough Guy?

Because men are stronger than women. Even men who aren't "tough guys".

If you think size and strength are irrelevant to real-world self-defense, you've never been in a real fight. Most martial arts "fights" are just glorified tag. Your white belt male opponent, if he went all out, would destroy you.
