CNN)Vice President Mike Pence on Tuesday said that any American, with a doctor's order, can now be tested for coronavirus.

The move appears to expand criteria that had previously limited testing to patients who had been hospitalized, absent certain extenuating circumstances such as contact with a coronavirus patient.
Criteria set by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has now called for "any American (to) be tested (for coronavirus), no restrictions, subject to doctors' orders," as Pence said when describing the new policy.
Number of coronavirus cases in Washington and California rises sharply
Number of coronavirus cases in Washington and California rises sharply
Earlier on Tuesday, the CDC suggested that has always been the case -- that who should be tested is based on doctors' discretion.
CDC officials also said this last week, when they expanded their testing criteria Thursday after the first US case of unknown origin was confirmed. That individual would otherwise not have fit earlier testing guidelines.
"As soon as that case was recognized, we met and we revised our case definition for persons under investigation," CDC Director Dr. Robert Redfield said Thursday.
What do you do if you need a test?
Health officials urge anyone who believes they should be tested to call ahead, rather than showing up unannounced and potentially exposing others to an infectious disease.
"Your healthcare professional will work with your state's public health department and CDC to determine if you need to be tested for COVID-19," the agency's website says.

That's great that they will allow testing now. Do we have test kits to actually do it?

No. Pence is laying out the theory. In practice, there still aren't enough tests. Many people have asked to be tested and were not able to. This has been anecdotally recounted on these boards, and the NYT wrote an article a few days ago about doctors not being able to test suspect patients. The medical community is highly frustrated, because masks are saved (often locked up) to be used only in confirmed cases, and in the meantime the entire front line of doctors and nurses are exposed. This means they can infect any patient or staff or relative that comes into contact with them.

This is how epidemics snowball

This is a new announcement and you're talking about last week.

"On a call with reporters on Mar. 3, Dr. Nancy Messonnier, director of the national center for immunization and respiratory diseases, said with the test kits the shipped, she expects state and local health labs to test as many as 75,000 people by the end of the week."

https://time.com/5793605/coronavirus-testing-united-states/

More related points from the article:
The CDC still plans to ship its own kits first to the 500 or so state and local health labs. However, each lab will get only one kit, which can perform about 800 tests. “That still keeps testing in the hundreds per state, which is really, really low,” says Michael Mina, assistant professor of epidemiology and immunology at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and medical director of the viral diagnostics lab at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. If other labs start developing their own tests, that number could increase rapidly.

Exactly how quickly more tests will become available isn’t clear. Each lab that builds its own test must still validate its results, and that typically takes several weeks, says Patel. And the EUA applies only to hospital labs in which lab directors are developing a test that they use only on their own patients. For companies selling commercial versions of the test (to smaller hospitals, for example), the validation process could take longer.

Again, PP, I want to reiterate that there are not enough tests for these ideals to be implemented. Today, March 4th, patients who are not in one of the three categories I mentioned cannot be tested. Unfortunately, I don't believe Messonier's optimistic timeline. Of course we will have more testing capabilities in the future, but how much more and when is not clear right now. In the meantime, the virus is spreading in the population.

My brother is a smoker. He has MS. He is unemployed and doesn't have insurance (my parents support him, long story).

I'm anxious about him for a million reasons, but of course now that he fits the "high risk" profile for the virus, I'm hoping to get him insurance. I'll pay for it.

What do you think the odds are that he will get coverage? Are insurance companies going to gouge people who try to get insurance in the face of this virus?

I didn't realize it but there's a second cruise ship with passengers who had coronavirus. This one went from San Francisco to Mexico from Feb 11 to Feb 21, and there are now 2 patients hospitalized in Northern Calif who were on that ship.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo confirmed that a family of four and their neighbor have all tested positive for the coronavirus, bringing the number of cases in the state to at least six.

March 4

This is the nightmare - the entire family sick, unclear if they are all hospitalized or if some need to fend for themselves while sick at home. The neighbor drove the dad to the hospital and caught it. So much for hoping neighbors will help out going forward...

That REALLY contagious if the driver caught from him in a short car trip, isn't it? I mean, my dh had the flu last year, and we slept in the same bed, shared a kitchen, etc, and I didn't get it. Neither did our 7yo. Taxi and Uber drivers take sick people around every day. What is the deal?

Flu is different because it's a virus that we've been exposed to for generations. It continually mutates, yes, which is why the yearly vaccine isn't 100% effective, but a large part of society has some immunity to it, even if just partially.

Flu isnt actually thar contagious. They are saying that the spread factor for covid is more like measles or chicken pos (which most of have been vaccinated for, or bad as children). If you’re driving someone sick, roll down the windows and have them face outwards, or wear a mask.
I do wonder if even a bandanna over the face of the sick person would help cut down the droplet spread.

You could have gotten a very mild or asymptomatic case of the flu. And driving someone to the hospital (maybe not such a short drive in Westchester) who is extremely sick and coughing is actually pretty high-risk contact.

FAKE NEWS. WHO literally just said that COVID-19 is LESS contagious than flu. Certainly not as contagious as measles. https://www.reuters.com/article/us-coronavirus-health-who/coronavirus-more-deadly-than-flu-but-containable-whos-tedros-idUSKBN20Q2G6

No new tests listed on the DC DOH surveillance data page.
Still only 6 tested in several weeks.

I'd like to telework if only because it is way hard to contain myself when someone rolls their eyes saying "there are no cases here," if you dare take any precaution holding a door handle or spraying Lysol on anything.
