I think people are reading into this too much. It is likely a schoolmint glitch and not a conspiracy.

Agree. Does anyone who applied for HB 6th grade NOT have “cancelled” entries?

We didn't, we have friends who did. Even though I don't have a dog in this fight, I think the issue is if it was somewhat widespread, it is messed up for them not to send a blast email about it.

Most likely because these kids were picked and then they rearranged based on siblings, friends, “special cases (cough: fake), etc. we have wealthy friends that live in a crowded zone whose kids have gotten into every lottery school they applied—even Woodlawn in 7th with a high waitlist #.

Funny how that is so often the case.

The lottery was open to the public. Did anyone attend?

How would you ever check, are you writing down every name?

Why is it not recorded and live-streamed and archived so we can all watch.

No, but since they have no idea whose parents are standing there watching and listening, why would they be dumb enough to swap out names? Really, these conspiracy theories just don't make sense. If they do make room for kids with special issues who would benefit from going there, they are adding spaces, rather than swapping out names after the lottery. It should be easy enough to figure out. Compare the number of kids whose names are pulled with the number of kids who matriculate. It's not that complicated or sinister. I know there are posters on here who love to insist otherwise, but it just doesn't make any sense.

They don't announce the names. I think that is what they call the "double blind" - they assign applications random numbers, and then draw the relevant ranking. So you might see application 345 got slot 1 for ATS, but don't know that was John Doe.

Yeah, they definitely aren't swapping out names. Anyone suggesting that is just making it up. They clearly do add students outside the lottery, though. APS even states as much on its HB admissions page. My guess is that rich/connected parents are just better at navigating that process.

They shouldn’t be assigning any numbers. The application portal should do that and it should also run the lottery - select random applicant numbers until it fills all the available slots. There should be nothing to watch and the “lottery” should be done in a matter of minutes after a button click.

If they aren’t doing it this way they are either not very bright and were afraid they wouldn’t be able to figure out how to push the button or they knew they knew they would need to manipulate the results in some way and did the lottery manually.

I don’t think ATS as a choice school has any slots. If your house is in Glebe ES zone, for example, then your kid is in Glebe zone for lottery purposes, whether they go to ATS or to a private school or to Glebe.

They changed that this year- instead of sending choice school students back to their neighborhood pool, they allotted slots to the choice schools themselves. This was all on the middle school options page.

If they did it this way they couldn’t fiddle with Applicants/admissions. That is why I assume they still do it the old-fashioned way.

It should 100% be computer-generated. It’s 2019.

It’s riddled with lies.

But how do you account for all the rich and connected people whose kids don’t get in? What’s the conspiracy theory about them?

There are a lot of rich and connected people in Arlington. No one said that being connected is an automatic in.

Anyone know why they are still just selecting 75 sixth graders in the initial lottery and planning for a max of 83 per grade in middle school over the next 10 years? I thought they were supposed to enlarge the program slightly and go up to 93 per MS grade once they moved to the new building? ?

But wouldn't there be even more conspiracy theories if it was done out of sight via computer without anything to watch?
