APS - HB Woodlawn Lottery

Some reporter should get the HB principal on the hot seat and ask how many students she lets in just because she likes them. That sh*t should stop. Actually, the whole HB program should stop. It creates haves and have nots.

So HB will get about 10-20 principal placement students per year? And that is just for 6th grade????

Seems that way. If class capacity is 83 but they only lottery 75 seats each year for rising 6th graders, they are holding open about 10% of the seats. ?

Some of those would be for twins. The second kid is an addition and doesn’t take up one of the lottery slots.

There aren’t that many sets of twins in Arlington to justify holding 10% of the seats. I can imagine, statistically, at most one set of twins is selected each year. That’s one seat...

I thought a twin wasn't supposed to take one of the slots. That the two twins were counted as one seat for the purpose of enrollment/lottery.

Yeah. I don't understand how HB was allocating those "new" seats from the new building. Have asked APS and have not gotten a very good answer. My kid is pretty happy at her middle school, but I still have a nagging feeling that APS is not being forthright about the new seats.

So does anyone know people who got HS seats that aren’t taking them?

We are still deciding, but I think we are going to take it. My son shadowed yesterday and liked it. We have to decide by next Friday.

Still trying to figure out how the principal of HB has this extensive circle of super-close families such that every year she has a bunch of students that she "lets" in. And that all of the other middle school principals and registrars who have to sign the transfer forms and the staff at central office who also get a copy never question why these random kids are transferring. (As opposed to other kids who are on the central wait list that the registrars can all see, or who are being pupil placed and are already receiving special ed services and are being moved with supports.)

There is not some conspiracy about HB. The principal is not letting her cronies in. Even staff kids don’t get spots except through the lottery or a few admin placements for sped needs. And by admin I am referring to District level.

My kid got a lottery spot. We don't have any connections and I've never even met the HB principal, unless you count sitting in the audience in the info session.

Just got lucky in the lottery, pure and simple.

There are some people on this board who just won't accept this for some reason.

When APS puts a per-student cap on PTA budgets across the county, then we'll talk about haves and have nots.

Well, conspiracy theories are more fun I guess.
