Oyster and bancroft feed to McFarland

Short version of this post: keep brown and black people out of Wilson.

And only this will relieve racist anxieties that are the main trigger for NW whites to flee for the burbs.

What’s your solution?

NP. Here’s the best solution:

1. Have all of the DCPS Spanish immersion elementary schools, EXCEPT Oyster-Adams, feed to MacFarland MS, and then Roosevelt HS;
2. Leave Oyster-Adams alone as a Pk to 8th school; and
3. Keep Oyster-Adams’ name out of your mouth.

Also I read that Oyster seventh graders scored the highest of all the DC public schools in English reading, beating out all the others in DC. Plus their eight graders took an AP test for college and something like 96 percent of them passed with flying colors. And they aren’t even in High school yet.

That sounds like a pretty impressive dual language school. A shame more schools don’t offer dual language across the country. Clearly the kids that go there have some advantage.

DCPS should make Oyster-Adams serve PK-5 and send the kids to the same bilingual middle school and high school all other DCPS bilingual elementary schools feed into: MacFarland, then Roosevelt. That would allow more children to have the benefit of bilingual schools. Clearly the kids that go to Oyster have lots of advantages, and those would not end if they went to a larger middle school,

It’s a good thing for us (an Oyster-Adams family) that’s not going to happen. We would not send our academically advanced children to MacFarland or Roosevelt. We would simply stay at Oyster until 5th, and then go private or move. No one is going to make us send our children to a school we don’t like.

That's fine. DCPS will be all right without you. But something has to give at Deal and Wilson, and Oyster and Bancroft make the most sense to move because of the existence of an underenrolled middle and high school that follows their specialized curriculum.

NP: your agenda is clear and despicable, my friend. Let's get those Hispanics out of our school.

Btw, let me guess, Wilson is not even "your" school.

So what is your solution?

End the feeder system that Rhee installed and that is breaking the system and provoking massive "brain drain" from everywhere else in the city.

If that's your solution you are acting only out of self-interest, not a desire to keep a Latino population at Wilson, because you're all too happy to throw Bancroft (75% black and Latino) out of Wilson as long as your school (63% black and Latino) gets your desired feeder pattern. Maybe the compromise is keep your precious Adams and then send it to Roosevelt. That would help with Wilson overcrowding and have no effect on Deal. And Adams is closer to Roosevelt than to Wilson anyway.

Why do you think Oyster Adams (oops, I said that name! At least I should have used hushed tones, right?) which is a part of DCPS, should be exempt from the discussion about solutions? Do OA (see - I am trying!) families pay more in taxes than the rest of the city? Are their children exceptionally wondefully special in some way?

You don’t know what you’re talking about. O-A is 4% Black, and 59% Hispanic. Adams is sending mostly Hispanics to Wilson. Bottom line: Leave O-A alone—it’s one of the few DC public schools that doesn’t need to be fixed.

I did some quick back-of-the-napkin math …. 4% + 59% = 63%

I guess 1st PP knows what they're talking about when they assert that OYSTER ADAMS is 63% black and hispanic ?

By the way — no one is trying to fix OYSTER ADAMS. We're trying to fix the untenable situation at Deal, and Wilson. — NP

Read slowly for understanding: O-A continuing to feed Wilson will in no way reduce the percentage of Hispanics at Wilson as the PP asserts. A large number of Wilson’s Hispanics come from Adams. Sending them to Roosevelt would reduce Wilson’s racial and ethnic diversity. Comprendes ahora?

I don’t care where Bancroft students attend HS, as long as DCPS leaves Oyster Adams alone.

OA is part of the system and is not exempt from being part of the solution. It would s not a private school.

Whatever. DCPS is not going to mess with Oyster, despite your wishful thinking. Save your money and move IB, or make other plans for your children to obtain a bilingual education.

So what?

Can you articulate why Wilson requires ### percentage of Hispanic students? How many Arabic-speaking students attend Wilson? Cantonese? Russian? What is the correct number of these groups, in your worldview?

I really don't understand why we as a city get fixated on the "Diversity Pie Chart Must Equal _____" question. Forty years ago, Wilson probably had 3% Hispanic students. Forty years from now, Wilson will probably have more Asian students than "white" or Hispanic students, if demographic trends continue.

Things change. Relax. Enjoy the ride and embrace new opportunities, such as feeding to a new high school.

You’re ill-informed and late to this party. Adams feeds to Wilson AND Roosevelt already (as a programmatic immersion feeder). Pretty much zero Adams grads choose to continue their education at Roosevelt. Happy now? If not, too bad.

There were also no Eaton kids opting for Hardy over Deal 5 years ago. They are now that they only feed to Hardy.
