Because liberals run ESPN? |
You’ve dangerously attempted to link her premeditated racism to some presumed mental illness and in doing so you’re essentially saying that she couldn’t possibly say these things and that her well documented history of anti sentimism , islamophibia and racism is simply a biproduct of something that isn’t totally under her control. People like you are the kind MLK warned the country about , she’s a racist plain and simple but oh no! Let’s give her the benefit of the doubt, lets try to explain away her undeniably evil bent . If someone caused our attempted to cause you real harm either though their words or acts , we both know you wouldn’t be so quick to pull the mental health card to defend them. This sort of hypocrisy is why I said and stand by my comment that people like you are part of the problem . She’s a bigot , plain and simple . |
This post says a lot about today's conservatives. Olbermann has called Trump a Nazi. Roseanne said that Jarrett was the offspring of the Muslim Brotherhood and Planet of the Apes. Many, such as the quoted poster, believe these are equivalent remarks. Others, including me, would argue that Roseanne's tweet was racist in that it indulged in the historic disparagement of blacks by comparing them to apes or monkeys. It is the racism inherent in Roseanne's insult that places it on a different level than "run of the mill" insults. I am pretty sure that if Roseanne had simply called Jarrett a Nazi, nobody would have even raised an eyebrow. Indeed, it is a pretty sad commentary, but in the days of grammar nazis, soup nazis, and even the President's lawyer referring to the FBI as "stormtroopers", "nazi" has become pretty played out as an insult. More importantly, in the context in which Olberman used it, it clearly referred to political positions held by the President. Certainly the accuracy of the label could be disputed -- and I for one would dispute it -- but it is simply not comparable to a racist epithet. We have seen this before with regard to other protected groups. Our society generally rejects prejudice based on inherent qualities such as race, gender, sexual orientation and so on. These are things that people are, not things that choose to be. But, increasingly, conservatives view political affiliation as deserving of such protections. If you can't discriminate against racial minorities, they argue, why can you discriminate against Trump supporters? Or, as the previous poster suggests, if you can't compare an African American woman to an ape, why can you call the President a Nazi? Both of these are viewed through a political lens with Roseanne being viewed by conservatives as a conservative, rather than a racist. So, having her show cancelled is not viewed as punishment of a racist, but rather of a conservative and, therefore, should be offset by punishment of a liberal. I think this is simply an indication of how many on the right -- though certainly not all -- just don't take racism as seriously as those of us on the left. |
| They don't take racism seriously because, racism. |

Roseanne should have been fired. No argument.
I agree that what Olberman has done is quite offensive--but not to the level of Roseanne. However, I think he should not have been hired. His comments are extremely offensive--but, I agree they do not come close to the level of Roseanne. |
| Good for abc. Roseanne is a racist lunatic. |
| The person she insulted is not an African American she is Iranian. So a person of color born in Iran moves to USA she becomes African American? |
Valerie Jarrett was born to two African American parents working overseas at the time of her birth. That doesn’t make her Iranian any more than John McCain is Panamanian because he was born to American parents on Panamanian soil. |
No a person born of African American parents who gave birth to her in Iran is African American but why let facts cloud your argument. |
+1 Her show is not that good. This is a terrible joke. But the double standard here is astounding. We either let the likes of Bill Mahar to speak outrageous things freely or we clean it up for everyone — no more Michelle Wolfe or SNL. |

Now "The Mooch" is offended. Really?
https://twitter.com/jonathanweisman/status/1001606011503960065 Making fun of someone for their eye makeup is a wee bit different than calling someone an ape. |
“Outrageous things” are different than racist slurs. Referring to an African American woman as an ape is in an entirely different stratosphere than making fun of Sarah Sanders’ smoky eye makeup. That you and others are conflating barbed comments with slurs speaks volumes about how ignorant you and others are about racism and bigotry - or how completely desensitized you are to it. Or both. |
Her parents were African American. John McCain was born in Panama. We don't consider him a Panamanian. Ted Cruz was born in Canada. We don't consider him to be a Canadian (a fact for which I am sure Canadians are thankful). |
If you don't get the historical reference to an African-American woman as an ape as compared to a comparison of orange hair, then I get why you don't understand racism. That Roseanne apologized indicates she knows she was wrong. The outrage by people of all stripes who understand racism is justified. The only people are excusing it are people like you. Maybe you would like to take some history classes to better understand the issue? Or maybe you are a racist too. |
