Students can apply for an exemption.

Exemptions will be accepted for students who will be above the age of 20 by the start of Fall 2018 or who have close residency to campus with a parent or legal guardian. The residence must be within the counties of Fairfax, Arlington, Alexandria, Prince William, or Loudoun.

I think there are a handful of posters who prefer va tech because tech/computers/etc have become so much more popular in the last 20 years.

Ranking:

UVA/William and Mary
JMU
Va tech (but higher then jmu if engineering, etc)

Radford

I didn't include the others in the ranking but I'll comment: GMU is local so it's a commuter school and kids want to go away but I've heard it has become much better then 20 years ago
Mary Washington was 80% women, no thanks
Honestly, I had never heard of CNU nor VCU until about 5 years ago.

Is this the ranking from 20 years ago when you went to school or your perception on how things are now?

If now, JMU is def. below VA Tech. and as some point out, Tech is easily above UVA and the best state school for Engineering.

VCU and VA Tech also have a medical school and their profile will only get better over time.

JMU is ranked #7 in Regional South now in 2018. Here's the link:

The 7th best regional southern university? What does that even mean?
USNWR is ridiculous. They just make crap up so they can make 50 different lists.

It means that the Confederate army is a big recruiter at that school.

Kind of a pointless exemption for most kids just out of HS. How many are over 20?

It's also an exemption, so you have to apply with no guarantees of anything. Mason isn't the best at paperwork so be prepared to nag nag nag if you think you qualify for an exemption. It's all freshman housed on campus for a reason - to give first years the first year dorm life experience.

Probably to also get the image of GMU being a "commuter" college out of the way and up its profile. Would be great to have a top 50-100 school in our backyard.. Will be good for rentals.

If you haven't been on campus in some time, you should take a walk on a weekend (you can get parking on weekends). The campus is lovely, most of the dorms are brand new or almost brand new. My DD has had some rooms that look like hotel rooms. Most of the facilities are state of the art and new. The building never stops (which can be a problem if you are sleeping in) but many buildings have been added in just the four years that DD was there. The Va Assembly is pumping money into the campus to develop areas lacking on some of the other campuses. A plus is that the campus feels safe for women.

^^ I garbles that last post. Be sure also to go to something at what used to be called the Patriot Center and the beautiful arts and theater complex.

Regarding UMW, the gender ratio is 63.8% female to 36.2% male - not "80% women." My sons have both told me it would be their pleasure to attend a school where men are in the minority. And FWIW, I went to Mary Washington (and loved it) and never had any trouble at all dating. When you're a student on campus, you don't really notice that there are more females. There always seemed to be plenty of guys.

I find it peculiar that you went to JMU and yet had never heard of VCU or CNU?? My husband went to JMU (and loved it) and both of us have always been well aware of both schools.

No, it’s because we know this isn’t a good thing for JMU.

LOL. This is a very JMU person kind of thing to post.

This whole thread is ridiculous, people.

Actually, this thread is a breath of fresh air in the swamp of HYP threads. Tho there may be a few unfortunate similarities

My take away is that we have lots of great choices in Virginia and as residents we are very fortunate. It's great to have the choice to send your kid to an in-state school that fits whatever their needs may be and where they get a great education for a great price. If you want to send your kid out of state and spend 3-4x the in state costs that's a choice too - but I'm glad for my kids sake that you don't have to do that.
