Freshman all have to live in the dorms.
Students can apply for an exemption.
Exemptions will be accepted for students who will be above the age of 20 by the start of Fall 2018 or who have close residency to campus with a parent or legal guardian. The residence must be within the counties of Fairfax, Arlington, Alexandria, Prince William, or Loudoun.
https://housing.gmu.edu/apply/new-students/apply-exemption
Kind of a pointless exemption for most kids just out of HS. How many are over 20?
It's also an exemption, so you have to apply with no guarantees of anything. Mason isn't the best at paperwork so be prepared to nag nag nag if you think you qualify for an exemption. It's all freshman housed on campus for a reason - to give first years the first year dorm life experience.
If you haven't been on campus in some time, you should take a walk on a weekend (you can get parking on weekends). The campus is lovely, most of the dorms are brand new or almost brand new. My DD has had some rooms that look like hotel rooms. Most of the facilities are state of the art and new. The building never stops (which can be a problem if you are sleeping in) but many buildings have been added in just the four years that DD was there. The Va Assembly is pumping money into the campus to develop areas lacking on some of the other campuses. A plus is that the campus feels safe for women. Probably to also get the image of GMU being a "commuter" college out of the way and up its profile. Would be great to have a top 50-100 school in our backyard.. Will be good for rentals.
