Students can apply for an exemption.

Exemptions will be accepted for students who will be above the age of 20 by the start of Fall 2018 or who have close residency to campus with a parent or legal guardian. The residence must be within the counties of Fairfax, Arlington, Alexandria, Prince William, or Loudoun.

Kind of a pointless exemption for most kids just out of HS. How many are over 20?

“OR WHO HAVE CLOSE RESIDENCY”

(not AND)

But you still have to file for exemption. It's not automatic. Mason is very bureaucratic.

Also if your student is interested in economics, business or management, there's the new huge Mason Korea campus in Songdo, S. Korea. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Mason_University

Are the lower tier schools really "on the rise" or are we just becoming more (or less?) realistic in our assessments as our kids reach college age?

Mason has been on the rise for two decades. It just ain’t happening.

It's great to have the choice to send your kid to an in-state school that fits whatever their needs may be and where they get a great education for a great price. If you want to send your kid out of state and spend 3-4x the in state costs that's a choice too - but I'm glad for my kids sake that you don't have to do that.

Wow, what a perceptive take away. Truly an original take on things.

UVA
W&M
Tech

The rest are like a consolation prize. Everyone gets a medal

This is the way we’re approaching it. UVA and W&M are tied at the top, with VA Tech third, but great for engineering/agriculture. All the rest are safety schools.

As someone that hires lots of people right out of undergrad, the WE in this response is what frightens me. Parents are SO invested in where their child goes to college, by the time they come to me at 22 they don’t know what is important to THEM! I’d rather hire a kid from one of these so-called “consolation prizes” that has a healthy self-awareness than one that can’t make a decision without thinking about what Mommy would advise!

LOL. A 17 year old make a unilateral decision on where his/her mom is going to spend over 100k.

Here is how I judge: where do I hire from, and where did the people from the coffee shop go.

I hire from Tech, UVA, and W & M. JMU -- I never found the students from JMU compelling. I hire math, physics, geosciences, EE and ME.

No one has to explain Tech, UVA or W & M.

At the coffee shop. I see several from Mary Washington, and several from CNU.

You ask your barista where they went t college?!?

You are being overly dramatic.

I have high schoolers and I have heard lots of WE when parents are talking about their kids grades, school choices, sports wins/losses, etc. Its one thing to guide them; it's another to be overly invested to where the child can't discern where their parents end and where they begin.

And a student still has to apply for admission, too. Who knew?

Let me guess - your child is a quivering mess when someone asks his opinion away from mommy and daddy?

My comment stands. You certainly know a thing or two about drama.

Mason has hit the no 1 "up and coming lists" for USN&WR, etc. for the last few years. Read its wiki and look into Mason Korea.
