Rank these VA public universities

In answer to your question, I'm not from here, so I don't know much about the schools except from internet searches. I'm just trying to get a sense of things from people who are more familiar with the VA schools. My kid doesn't know what she wants to major in. She's not a math/science kid, but clearly a humanities/fine arts kid. She'll probably go "undecided" if that's allowed. She gets good grades in challenging courses - but not straight As, and as I understand it, UVA and W&M are very competitive, so those are probably out. Not sure how to rank the rest and trying to eliminate some so we can narrow the field. Trying to decide if a kid like that should bother looking at V-Tech, for instance.

Skip VT; have a look at JMU. (Maybe also St. Mary's College of Maryland and/or the University of Delaware, depending on size/location preferences.) Which schools are on the list in other parts of the country?

UVA
W&M
CNU
JMU
VTech
GMU
VCU, UMW, ODU, Longwood, Radford (These all seem to me to be around the same level - is that accurate?)

Also, are UVA and VTech schools that you would mostly only consider if you were math/science oriented?

In general terms, I agree with this ranking, with the caveat that some programs are better than others.

Your dd can get a great education even at the "lesser" publics IMO. I went to JMU and loved it but my dc have had two amazing young teachers who both went to Christopher Newport, so based on that sample size I would say their education department is doing something right.

I'm also a parent in VA with kids in college and HS currently, and I agree with this as well. I would say this is the general consensus, with the exception for VT engineering being at the top for engineering. Of course, there are people who may prefer one school over the other for specific programs or reasons.

I'd put JMU and Tech on the same line, unless its engineering, then Tech is ahead.

Yep!

It all depends on the major.

VT is tops for engineering
UVA/VCU for medical fields and nursing
UVA and W&M for liberal arts
Radford for criminal justice
UMW for historic preservation and geography
GMU for business

Pick a school based on your child’s interests not the school’s popularity

The JMU boosters are delusional. They’re the only 2 people who would put JMU equal to VT. Sure, a few kids maybe choose JMU over Tech but that doesn’t make the schools’ rankings equal.

What about JMU? Are they good at anything other than elementary ed?

JMU (and other schools including VCU and CNU) are good for the arts/humanities

Virginia Texh has a medical school. It is new but competitive for entry. It also has the only local Vet School. For all science it is really the best in state option. Nursing is better elsewhere and UVA is tops for medical. But Virginia Tech is tops for science both in terms of reputation and actual options and disciples taught. And no, JMU. No. Not in the same league. And honestly, VT has good business and Architecture as well. It is not a one-trick engineering school at all.

Sounds like Tech should then be ahead of UVA.
