UVA in-state v. Davidson v. Washington and Lee

Wow. Just seeing this thread. The pick is among (1) Excellent in-state, vs (2) Good but small and limited private, vs (3) OK party-private?

Really? This is really a question?

New poster...When I was in college, families of a certain "social status" would choose one of these schools. In my mind, that's why they are comparable, not based on academics at all, more on "social scene" and greek life.

If one were truly concerned with social status none of these schools would be on anybody's list.

Huh? by "social status" I mean the parents are all members of the same southern country club or the same debutante society in town, not SES on a national scale. Again the schools were comparable on social scene, parties, Greek life. The parents may have gone there as well.

For us, no question, UVA NOT!

Just not the right place for my kid.

^^ Why not? My DC is there and is blissfully happy. I couldn't crowbar him out of the place. He is so happy. (not into the drinking or greek scene)

How about UVA in-state vs. full pay Williams or Amherst?

I'm glad your kid is happy. Do you really think all kids are the same?

As with all things, it depends. I went to Amherst and live in VA. I would gladly pay for DD to go there and she's got the grades and scores, but DD wants a larger research university with engineering so UVA is ahead...and she probably won't apply to Amherst.
I think Williams is great and would gladly send her there as well.

you're comparing apples and oranges. My DC wanted a SLAC so I'd happily pay for Williams or Amherst. If DC wanted a research uni I would have happily paid for one that's more competitive than UVA.

Read the ^^ above. Someone had said 'no way' to UVA for their child or family. PP is just asking "why" and signals with a ^^ to help answer questions. Of course the 23,000 kids are not all the same. Sheez!

OP here. Indeed, Davidson and Washington and Lee both released their RD results this week, and my S was fortunate to have been accepted to both. We now have three good choices. My feeling is you can’t go wrong with any of them, although the difference in price tag is obviously a significant consideration.

My DC didn't like Uva, and doesn't really want to be in 13th grade with a bunch of Nova kids DC has been with since AAP days.

Davidson has better reputation for undergraduate teaching, high marks for "profs are accessible," although also it's also reputed to be much tougher academically.

Will visit on accepted students day and see how DC likes it.
