I would point out that it isn't helpful to the conversation to talk about "white sports" and ECs that "white kids can't come near." If someone were to replace white with black I'm sure you would find these statements to be distasteful. I am a believer in affirmative action because it's the best way to even the playing field but I don't think you understand what affirmative action is. Evening the playing field effectively means lowering standards for historically under-represented groups of applicants. Again, I think that's appropriate in light of the socioeconomic disadvantages many under-represented groups face. So of course the average admitted students from these groups will have lower credentials than the average student overall. That doesn't mean that your grandson necessarily benefited from affirmative action....he may very well have not. When California adopted Prop 209 making admissions race blind, the number of admitted AA and latino students dropped by half. This obviously reduced the diversity of the student body and the Cal syste has made great strides on fixing that problem but that experience highlights what admissions would look like without affirmative action. |
I have said this many time on here but White people hate the URM hook because it is the only[u] one they cannot take advantage off. The other ones are fine because Whites have traditionally benefited from them. It really is that simple. |
LOL! That's BS and you KNOW it!! No one with a B- average is getting into an Ivy (or any elite school for that matter). |
It is not so hidden.
|
+1. It boils down to this. White people do not want to accept, that even with all the institutional advantages of being White, that a POC could actually be better than their kid or that an admissions person could believe that a POC brings more value to the campus. |
|
ok here is some truth
I could care less about your kid I know my kid has better stats than this person who got into all 8 ivies And yes I am white |
This is true, but a big part of the issue is that APPLICATIONS from AA and Latino kids also dropped by more than half. These kids, even the "qualified" ones, stopped applying. |
That is good for your son, I am SURE that he will get great opportunities. You SHOULD be happy. But also know that you could care less about my kid (that is the wrong use of the phrase BTW), but I certainly could not care less about yours. |
Newsflash: just because your kid has better "stats", doesn't mean they'll be a better fit for the freshman class that the university is putting together. It takes all stripes. Your kid is probably a dime a dozen in terms of what he/she brings to the table vs. someone else. Stop kidding yourself that high GPA/SAT is some kind of meal ticket to elite universities. As I'm sure you are finding out, that is not how US elite university admissions works, nor should it be. Why would a university want a freshman incoming class of 2000 identical UMC white drones?? What does that do for the university?? |
|
Exactly! Many of these UMC whites have been tutored and test-prepped to death. When their artificially inflated grades/test scores don't get them into a top university, their parents start making accusations of reverse racism. Where's my white tears bucket, again? |
+1. Right...I call them "Stepford" applicants. |
I am the PP you are responding to and to be honest, I've even seen this with UMC Asian parents. My sister does alumni interviews for an ivy and I can't tell you how many UMC Asian applications she has seen where the kid has clearly been test-prepped to death with "perfect stats" who doesn't get into ANY of the elite schools they apply to. She also says that none of them can give a good reason why they even WANT to go to an elite school. The admissions committees can see right through this BS. |
Exactly! People must not know how admissions works. |
Don't worry--Asian students still have to score 140 points higher on their SATs than whites to get into the same school. So with open minded, unbiased people like your sister interviewing, there's no hope for equal opportunity for Asians any time soon. https://www.nytimes.com/2017/01/30/opinion/white-students-unfair-advantage-in-admissions.html |
