Has anyone received an HGC letter yet?!

All I can say to the parents who received rejection letters today is to keep your spirits high, and your child's spirit even higher. They are only 8 and 9 year olds and the world is their oyster at this point. This one decision from a county that keeps their decision parameters vague should not determine your child's long road ahead.

Absolutely true

Home school has a lot of kids under a lot of parental pressure to get in, complete with test prep.

A lot of perspective and calm is called for here.

Just curious - what school do you go to where all the kids are doing test prep?

I'm heartbroken and honestly flabbergasted. He scored 232 on his 2nd grade MAP-P test - I was told it was the highest the school had seen for 2nd grade. His 3rd grade teachers told me he fit the definition of what they consider a truly gifted child.

Not sure if we will appeal or not.

Good luck to everyone else who is waiting on their decisions today.

What were his Inview scores. Just curious and if you don't feel like sharing that's fine.

Happy to share (it's all anonymous here, right!): His Inview scores were Analogies: 90; Sequencing: 99; Quantitative Reasoning: 98; Verbal Reasoning Context: 99; Verbal Reasoning Words: 85

His 3rd grade teacher just reported to me that his MAP-R scores this year were 214 and 232

My DD has very similar MAP scores and she was also rejected. She's a bit bummed but taking it in stride. The HGC is at her home school so she had hoped to be one of the "GT kids." But she knows that plenty of smart and talented kids don't make it in.

We had a message from Barnsley principal on our answering machine. He said he was personally calling all parents to make sure they had proper notice for the open house. Sure is a nice way to start anew and speaks to me of his dedication and desire to build community! A great first impression and I don't think other principals of HGC's made the calls in talking to friends across the county! Can't wait to meet him and see the school!

I'll just say I don't get personal phone calls from my current school and principal so it was refreshing.

Rejection letter from cces today. Thought we had a good shot, but not the end of the world. I still love him, even if he won't make it to the one percent....

Parents..please don't be too upset. At the 3rd grade level kids are so unpredictable in terms of testing. Hugs to you!

Exactly !

Two years ago, my son did his HGT test and got into Cold Spring Wait Pool (it was endless wait). We thought he could have made it based on his school report card, MAP scores but he did not.

This year, he did the test very well and got into TPMS.

Encourage them to take new challenges whenever available,

This is helpful. Thank you.

Also remember the HGC is just two short years, and there are two more opportunities to apply to magnet programs. Anecdotally, seems plenty of kids get into MS magnets who did not get into the HGC. As PP said, testing is very unpredictable at age 8/9!

My son did couple test prep that we bought from Dr. Li. He told us that the prep is the same as the actual test.
But when my son did the real GT test, it tool half of the time, and he said it is MUCH easier than the prep.

Which means this year, the GT test is changed. If it is so easy, the score won't be able to differentiate the kids ability. Other factors will play more important roll.

BTW, my son is in wait pool. We got the letter today.

Correct my typos: he did couple mock-up tests a week before the GT test. My purpose was to have him get familiar with the format, but it turned out the mock-up is very different from the actual test.

Rejected from Barnsley. My child had a bad morning the day of the exam but I don't know if that translated to the test score or not. I am disappointed but not overly so.

What is the test prep that people are talking about? Where do you go for this? Just curious...obviously too late now.
